  • Driver Grip Pressure

During my last few rounds I decided to relax my grip and, by doing so, I found that I was hitting the ball really well with both my irons and my hybrids (especially my hybrids). I was playing some of my best golf ever with this new relaxed grip. I would say it would measure about 3 out of 10. My problem is this, however. When I used this new relaxed grip on my driver, I found that I was skying the ball. Does anyone know why this should be. Should my grip be a bit more firmer with my driver?

    hi
should be firm enough to stop the driver turning in your hands, it take practice to feel just whats enough pressure for you.
    cheers

It sounds to me like you were still hitting down with the driver since you were nailing the irons and hybrids.

I have the same exact problem. Sky my driver a lot and not always hit down on my irons. When I play I will pull a wonder shot out the bag then the next will go in the trees. So apparently your meant to hit the ball on the up with the driver and with the irons you hit down on the ball. I'm going to the driving range tomorrow so I might try and get a clip up on here to assess the damage .

Its important to note that the hitting down and hitting up are as a result of the ball position and length of the club rather than you consciously trying to hit up or down.
Play the driver off your left big toe and tee it nice and high, you will automatically hit it on the upswing then.

I believe grip pressure needs to be fit for purpose. A light grip is suitable for the average iron or hybrid shot as it will automatically tighten in the downswing. The driver being longer creates more force so will need a slightly tighter grip pressure to control it, maybe 5 or 6. When playing out of rough or splashing out of sand the grip pressure will also need to be firmer.

All good points, guys. Thanks. I was really surprised at just how much grip pressure affected my shot. With my new lighter grip, I can now feel lag in my hybrids and irons. Will keeping working with my driver.
