  • Do I need an offset driver?

I broke my offset driver that I can't live without - couldn't help it, it insisted on hitting a smothered snap-hook so it deserved everything it got.
But, I ordered a square offset one at vast expense, and have had to play with a 'normal' driver in the intervening 2 weeks - it's still not here but I have never driven the ball straighter in my life with a regular driver.

Seems like you don't. Maybe the answer was your new setup method

Sounds like to me that, when hitting smother hooks with an offset driver and hitting straight balls with a normal driver, it's time to move to a normal driver given your current address/setup positions!

Dammit, anybody want to buy a square offset driver, brand new, never out of it's box??

They won't let you trade it back for a straight model?

No, only joking, it's arrived now and I couldn't wait to get down the range yesterday to see what would happen - so impatient was I that I went at the wrong time (dusk) and couldn't see most of my shots (either that or they went 45 degrees left) I'm going again at lunchtime today, I'll let you know what my shot shape is, should be interesting.

Re: Do I need an offset driver?

The range session was fine, then I hit some more balls prior to playing in the Sunday stableford at my club and only one got away to the right. But when I played, I hit some of the most amazing hooks I've ever seen and had to aim way right to have a chance of ending up in the fairway!
I corrected it quite well by putting the ball back in my stance, but everything was either a draw or a hook.
I'm not admitting defeat yet though, a few more range session with some grip-weakening experiments and it will be fine, I hope.

                hi Mariner
do you mean an offset where the shaft is in front of the face or offset like in the face is closed a degree or two.
i use to have a set of metal woods that had the shaft in front of the face and i never found them any diffrent to hit to the normal type driver, it the same with offset ping irons, i have never found them hard to use.
                cheers

I wondered why there are two kinds of "offset" and nothing seems to differentiate between them - my driver has a closed face but is otherwise normal

Re: Do I need an offset driver?

Most offsset clubs are closed at address so that while the top line looks sqaure the face is closed. Designed to help the slicer whi cannot close the face. Hence someone with a good swing would set up with the face closed and go left. Its made even worse with those dang cavity back long irons where the offset is huge

Im a bit the same as you but with the long irons. I have a minimal offset driver aand can work it pretty easily. I find it near impossible to work the offset long irons - so much so im considering giving blades a try or find a non offset iron set

                      hi
here's a picture of one of my old offset drivers that my daughter now uses.
you can see how the shaft leads the club face like ping irons do.

By the way how do you hit your regular 3 wood? I mean what kind of flight do you normally get? A fade? Does this apply to your long irons too?

Re: Do I need an offset driver?

I always allow for a slight fade when hitting my 3-wood which isn't offset, but any attempt to hit it "hard" results in an OTT move . . . but when it goes smoothly . . . . well I holed out from 195 yds last month!

I did that last year with my 3 hybrid around this same time, tell me it's not the greatest feeling in the world...(never had a hole in one yet.)
