  • I Might Go Back To This

This is more or less a ball position issue or ?. Anyway, I have found that I hit the ball WAY better ( irons) when I play the ball let's say 2 balls right of center with the mid and short irons, and wedges just inside the right foot, nothing center or left of....I went out today and was spanking them this way, and what's interesting is that my ball flight was not low(I was not flipping to get the ball up, lol) been down that road. But what really freaks me out is how can one hit the ball like this with the head in FRONT of the ball? It's more or less playing the ball in a knockdown or punch position with a full swing but getting heighth and plenty of distance....Could this be a swing fault and this is a makeup move? I like what I'm seeing but confused on how this is working. I there is delofting but the head in front of the ball?

    Thanks

Or maybe you were just experimenting with all sorts of different types of swings to see what would happen, which there is nothing wrong with doing that... But I don't understand why you "might go back to this" swing.

Anyway, I'm guessing you are probably casting (losing the angle between your left arm and the club shaft) the club head very early in the downswing, which allows you to find the bottom of the arc very far back in your stance. I'm also guessing that your hands are pretty even with the ball at impact. Even though your head may be forward of the ball I'm guessing this unorthodox swing style is being produced with very little body dynamics and mostly arms and shoulders. Also, I'm guessing that timing this swing with any consistency must be spot-on to have any consistency in ball flight and distance.

Lot's of guessing as to why this swing worked for you. Instead of figuring out why a known unorthodox swing worked I would instead try to figure out how to swing correctly. But maybe that's just me...

    Hey

You know it very well could be losing that angle as you spoke of (casting) but my hands are always ahead of the ball at impact. My backswing thought is right shoulder back and then down (not out)on the downswing. I have tried for a long time to play the ball for my irons center or left of,but it sure felt like I had to do a severe sway to the left or I would skull them. If my head is behind the ball with an iron that's when things get squirrly.I play driver off left heel(fine) Hybrid center(fine) and irons well you know.....Maybe I'm making to much of this but the irons it seems I hit the ball first then the divot when played back like that and I do get pretty aggresive at the ball. I go to the range everyday and play usually 1-2 a week, but anyway, for some reason I can trust that more than playing the ball up...I don't know

That's gotta be it,casting sometime during the downswing, just gotta figure out how long to hold the angle..........I know the body has to keep turning and it should square the face(Greg's RH drill) but I don't know if I can rotate that much.....There's a time on the downswing when you have to release the power?

Sorry, I guess I was writing this as you were posting the above.

This sounds like me at one point. Could you possibly have a bad reverse pivot?

Re: I Might Go Back To This

Oh No, no reverse pivot. But I think was has happened again and I have been down this road before, is that since my grip is stronger (cup in the left wrist) at address, I have not been maintaining the cup..I fell back into the strong grip at address and then on the BS hinging the right wrist backwards,flat/bowed left wrist at the top with the club shut throughout the swing. So if I was to guess I would have to play the ball that far back so that I catch the ball before the club closes even more(something like that)lol. That is why I believe I haven't been able to play ball up in my stance, because the face would be already looking WAY left at impact, or I would have to do something to hold of the release which I think I've done that before(that's why my left elbow hurts). But I went out today and tried to maintain the cup in my left wrist and things were better,(BrianW and I had this discussion awhile back). I could play the ball pretty much anywhere, and it seemed to shallow out my divots.....I've been battling this for along time and no instructor that I've been to has ever said anything about my grip or shut face, just keep the club in front of me, which has worked but that cost me some $$$ for that advice.
I had to fix the clubface some how and keeping that lw cup actually make me hinge possibly correct.

          Thoughts?
