  • How to Cure Flipping ??!!!

    I continually flip the club instead of releasing it. It is causing all sorts of inconsistant shots. When I can force myself to really release the left hand without the flip, the shots are wonderful, but, I can't come up with a way to train myself to keep the wrist out of it.

    I think the right hand is helping the flip a bit and am not sure how to get it to be "quiet".

    You can try to keep your right elbow bent until after you hit the ball, flipping is caused by an early release, usually due to extending the right arm which pushes the hands away from the body. Pretty hard to flip the wrist without the right arm straightening. This also keeps the left arm extended, if one bends the other tends to extend. Since we want the left to control the arc, it must be the extended arm at impact, so if you have trouble doing that, work on the bent arm is sometimes easier to do. Both arms do extend, but it is well after the ball is gone, centrifuge force will take care of that....

        No joke - eBay a 'Greg Norman Secret'. It holds your wrist in that cup position, impossible to flip.

          Totally agree!!!!

          Got this for my wife, she chronicly flips her hands and using this device makes it impossible to do it. Hopefully in after few weeks of use she will have broken the habit too a good degree.

            I still use mine to start practicing, and while warming up before a round. It just helps reinforce that feel.

              First well done for recognising this .. took me a long to realise this is where most of my faults lied. I spent a long time and a lot of practice taking my hands out of the swing. What i find works is keeping a light grip and feel the club in the fingers of your left hand, then turning (really turning) trhough the ball. The feeling is like you will hit it miles left with that turn but provided your hands/wrists stay passive the turn will actually square the clubhead/ Dont be afraid of being 'open' at impact

              I actually had to hit a lot of balls left before I straightened up and my brain realised than my wrists had to stay bent (i.e. the Secret)

                Couldn't agree with you more P. Last night I finally had a good ballstriking session. Everything was thin OR felt like I was "lifting" the ball. Then I decided to keep a little more weight on my left side, stay centered, and really DRIVE my left foot into the ground to shift the weight. I felt like I could turn REALLY hard and DOWN into the ball. Also noticed that by driving the inside of my left foot hard into the ground, my spine angle stayed constant. I focused on rotating my hips/core, and the arms just came along for the ride. No flipping, no thin/lifted shots. Just solid compression.

                Hit the artifical green with my 8i 10 times in a row, all carry. So that 152-154 yard 8i's, all carry. Once I got used to the motion, it felt almost effortless.

                If you rotate/turn hard enough to start the swing, AND KEEP TURNING, the arms/hands will "lag." They have to. If you keep turning, they just can't physically "catch up."

                The only way they will "catch up" is if you stop turning. You will "flip" your arms & hands through the ball. The results are pulls, fat shots, and other ugly things we don't like

I decided that I had to keep turning ( all the low handicappers I play with bascially all said the same thing). I started down that road and still had my a flip which equalled huge pulls. I kept at it and just turned even harder and focused on keeping the hands passive and the left wrist flat. I didnt care about OTT or in the slot or whatever .. just 'always be turning'. After a while it started to click and when I was hitting 8i 155 yards with no hands just a turn the light really came on for me

                    You a Chuck Quinton fan? I think Greg's RHD helped me realize what my arms/hands needed to do in the swing. Quinton showed me the body/torso aspect.

                    I totally feel you on the "swinging left." In fact, my good strikes felt like they should be OTT pulls. But in reality, the were inside-square inside solid decending strikes. Almost feel like I am swinging OTT.

                    It's truly effortless. I feel like I can go HARD at the ball and hit it very straight and long. About a 152-155 8i. The biggest gain I saw was with my SW. I was only hitting my 54* SW 85 yards. I pumped several out there 105 the other day.

                    Great to hear someone else "caught on fire" and I really hope you keep it ablaze!!!!

                      I think CQ has some good ideas and his passive arms/always be turning stuff is great IMHO. However all this stuff came from Jimmy Ballard who was teaching it years ago

                      Yes it does feel like going left. I used to have a shut clubface going back and a shift/flip. I'd shift left and then try and throw my hands through the ball. Sometimes id time this OK for a while but I soon realised it was never going to be consistent. Had some lessons with a really good pro who saw this immediately and got me turning through the ball. He got me rotating the club a little more on the BS and worked on the idea was for me to feel like I hit the ball with my right hip by firing my right side etc. Less shift, more turn. As soon as he said this I went back to Greg's RHD and impact drills and could see it was all related

                      As you say at first I thought I was going to hit it 3 fairways left as I'd got into a pattern of aiming right and trying to turning my hands over. I felt *so* open at impact it was silly and it felt hugely OTT (it wasnt of course). Once I had this down I was hitting pulls as my hands were still too active through impact and I still went at it from the top and casted. That took a lot of practice and it was Brian Manzellas 'hold the twistaway' thought/video that really helped me iron it out. Once I got it I could actually feel the turn really lag/load the club and it slings through impact as my arms catch up

                      Feels like cheating when you get it right doesnt it

                        LOL. Yes, it can feel like cheating at times, especially when you play with someone who is struggling so hard.

                        I was swinging last night, its amazing when you STOP your body rotation, and realize whats going wrong, that you can watch your arms just get thrown in front of your body.

                        All I need to do now is make sure my preshot routine has at least 1 full turn in it. Turn, and turn hard, and keep turning!

                        I bolded a line above about a video. Do you have a link to it? Be curious what thats all about.

                          Its Manzellas 'confessions of a former flipper' video. You can download it off his website for about 10 USD I think. All about hitting the ball with your pivot, passive hands and a flat left wrist - its good stuff with some good drills but ton be honest it sounds like you have already got there and worked this out!

                          I was messing about today and I noticed that in my old shift and flip swing, at impact if I stuck a club where my sternum was pointing it was 20 odd degrees behind the ball. It was from there I would try and release with the arms/hands. In my swing now its almost 45 degrees open. Just shows how much more I am now turning through impact and how my chest and hands are well ahead of the ball

                            What I bolded is so key. That flipping causes those ugly fat shots and strike with thin divots and no compression. If you can get your hands ahead of the ball and club head lagging behind, you are good to go.

                            Do you feel like you go "hard" with your body? I feel like I really aggressively rotate and drive down into the ball.

                              Definitely!... However if I go *too* hard from the top i'll slide or have an upper body dive as I turn. I like to feel like I stand on my left foot (settle the weight) and then bang, turn my hips/chest/torso to the left of the target as fast as I can while I keep my head/spine angle still. I can see how I could really max out distance as a couple of times i've turned really aggressively, managed to stay in balance and hit a monster drive but most of the time i'll lose balance doing it. The times I do connect with it I get a feeling of lag in the hands, its hard to describe but I can feel the club sort of stressing/loading as I turn esp. on my right forefinger. Im still working hard on finding a balance between a stable setup and being able to turn as hard as I can and its getting better.. a wide stance doesnt seem to work quite as well as I seem to fade it a lot from there, maybe because I dont shift enough before the turn?
