  • Duck hook

I've been playing pretty well recently, really killing my driver, but yesterday when I went out and played I developed a serious duck hook with my driver and even some of my longer irons. I know my setup is was the same but I think I might have been keeping to much weight on my front foot. Can having to much weight on your left side cause you to hook and pull hook the ball??

You are underplane (you swing too far inside out). A hook is caused by an inside out swing plane while the face is too closed. A pull hook is a closed face with an above plane move (probably a tad over the top on those swings).

    Fix the path first.

I used to suffer from this very badly indeed to the extent that I was on the verge of quitting the game.

Unfortunately I don't anymore have the link that BrianW posted that provided the answer. The answer that is for me - and not necessarily you but its worth looking at.

My duck hook was down to not completing the backswing and rushing the transition. In my case it was a vicious circle; because the duck hook was so bad I wanted to get off the tee as quickly as possible which meant I swung as quickly as possible, didn't complete the backswing, rushed the transition, had a duck hook .... you get the picture.

At the same everyone was advising me to "three-quarter" swing whichj made things worse.

If you've been killiing the driver recently you might be pushing too much for more (and thus rushing) so I'd suggest that you go to the range and just concentrate on completing the back swing with a full turn; it could be as simple as that.

      Good luck I really sympathise.

How can you tell that from his post? I see nothing that would unequivocally indicate that he is suffering from that problem.

In response to your question: Yes, if your weight and balance are off that can promote a hook and pull hook.

Thanks for the reply Avid. I know my hook isn't from swinging to far from the inside like one poster suggested. I believe it is more of a weight transfer problem and getting to handsy and using my arms to much. I use my feet alot in my golf swing, I try to imulate Jack, But I believe that I'm getting stuck in the back position and I'm trying to save it with my hands and thus promoting a hook. I guess I'm going to have to work on that now.
