  • Army Swing?

No, I'm not talking about combat golf. I recently reviewed some note from a few lessons I had taken. Bringing around my left shoulder under my chin on my back swing was one item my instructor gave me. I concentrated on this at the range and tried to re institute it back into my swing. I had a lot of power and everything was straight, even my driver.

Before I think I was under rotating my shoulders and like I was trying to swing the club almost completely with my arms. (Army Swing) I hardly had consistency doing this. I didn't dare to hit driver.

My question is, does my theory make sense? Does the shoulder turn (or lack thereof) make that much of an impact?

    Thanks

Well the results seem to have paid dividends for you dfix16.

You've touched on a few things in your post that answer your own question.

Swinging almost entirely with your arms can be haphazard at best, as you have experienced. So maybe the thought of getting your shoulder under your chin simply served to reactivate your body turn and match it up with the amount of arm swing you were using?

However, some great players of the past didn't get their shoulder under, just next to the chin. A full shoulder turn isn't necessarily as full as a lot of people think.

Like Neil said, you don't need a full shoulder turn. But you do need to turn! I'm guilty of a false turn when I'm getting tired - instead of turning my shoulders and keeping my arms more in front of my body, I simply reach across my chest with my arms. Needless to say, the results are less than spectacular (ok, even less than good).

Taking the club away with the arms will fan it sharply inside causing a range of errors. The club should be taken away with the arms and shoulders working together.
