Re: Please review my swing and comment

I must say that this is probably one of the most flexible 2-plane swings I have seen. I looks like you pull the ball a bit, probably high, and I can only assume you fade it back to your target.

You look very repeatable, so I don't think you want to much in terms of change. Are you looking for anything more? Like more distance? Are you able to draw the ball if you need to?

yeah...i was shocked when i started reviewing the tape......the club head was waaaaay past parallel.......i would like to work more towards a shorter swing maybe one plane.....that would take a total reworking..
my ball does fade...i have been trying to hit the ball on the inside of the ball and trying to get my right hand over my left.......i hit my irons pure but it is def. my driver killing me right now......never considered myself as flexible

OK if your gonna swing like John Daly, then your going to have start drinking a lot more beer and get that gut to hang more over your belt....lol...just kidding. When I see the club going that far past parallel, I usually start looking real hard at the grip. Gripping incorrectly will cause the wrist to cock incorrectly. Seem like you are breaking both wrists the same, this is not correct. The left wrist moves up/down as if you are shaking hands, the right goes back/forth. The left wrist is what keeps the club from going more then 90 degrees to the forearm, only a very few are supple enough to go much beyond this rule. Daly comes to mind, Bobby Jones. To get the idea, take your club and grip it as you normally do, you should be able to cock your wrist up towards your right shoulder. The back of the left hand and forearm will be straight and the back of the right hand will face the shoulder, this is how it will be at the top of the swing as well. This is the wrist cock, Click on the Tips section above or the lesson tabs both have good sources for getting the correct grip.

This is how i swing.....somehow I shoot 82's on 132 sloped courses.....I do want to change it for two reasons
          • I am 32 and wont be able to swing like that forever
          • I played american football for 8 years and rugby for 5 and my shoulders already are shot.......After 36 a day I can feel it.
I am going to work on it today but it is a long term change

In the image linked below I have tossed you up against Ernie Els for comparison (with the drivers).

            IndianaGolf vs. Ernie Els drivers

            From face on:
At address your right hip and right knee are directly above your right foot, and Els has a wider stance with his hip and knee bumped closer to the target. The other big difference is spine tilt. You have your spine (shown by the relationship between shirt buttons to belt buckle) straight up and down, and Els has his spine tilted away from the target.

As you swing back your right hip rises, your spine tilts toward the target, and your head moves closer to the target. At the same stage of the swing Els hips are level, his spine is tilted away from the target, and his head is farther away from the target.

As you start down your left hip rises (you've lost knee flex in both legs now), and your arms fling over your right shoulder. Els right hip bumps toward the target very slightly, and his club and arms drop behind his right shoulder.

At impact your energy has been spent rising up and trying to keep you from falling over. Els at impact has remained in balance, and kept his body posture.

            Down the line view:
At setup your wieght and posture have you tilted toward the ball (see the red balance line that extends up from the balls of the feet). Els in comparison has he knees and the edge of his shoulders stacked on top of the balls of his feet. Also notice that his hips are are to the left of the balance (red) line.

As you swing back to hip high your hands and club move away from your body and upward toward the sky. Els on the other hand keeps his hands the same distance from his body that they were at address, and swings the club back along the original shaft angle plane.

As you continue back your upper arms seperate from the chest, and raise the club upward toward the sky. Meanwhile Els keeps the upper arms connected to the chest with the arms and chest moving back in sync.

At the top of the swing your left arm is on a steep angle compared to the original shaft angle plane, and the rear hip has risen (the separation of the upper arms from the chest, the steep angle, the rear hip rising, and gravity all contribute to the shaft then going past parallel). Els at the top has his left arm parallel to the original shaft angle plane, and his hip has rotated instead of lifting.

As you start down you raise up out of your posture, balance shifts to your toes (look at how much of your body is on the ball side of the red line), your club pulls up, and your hands swing out toward the ball. Els alternatively maintains his posture & balance, keeps his back toward the target, and his club, arms, & hands drop behind him which it turn drops the club on to a shallow plane.

At impact your weight is on your toes, you've lost posture, and your shaft is on a steep angle (with the shaft pointed through your shoulders). At impact Els has maintained his balance and posture, and his shaft angle is shallower (pointing more toward his belt).

In summary the areas I recommend you work on are setting up with good balance and posture (spine tilted away from the target, and shoulders and knees stacked on top of the balls of the feet). On the backswing move your arms and body back in sync (upper arms near the chest), and get your weight on the inside of the right leg. For the downswing keep your back turned away from the target, and allow your arms to drop down behind you. As you swing down and through the ball maintain your balance.

If you want a key thought to focus on as you seek to improve try: balance.

Damn thats alot of words..could have summed it up with "you suck"

I appreciate it and will take some of your advice. I played with a couple teaching pros and one of my probles as you stated is I am too far away from the ball causing me to lunge. I started this because a guy wanted me to start hitting a draw. I got my power back today and am looking to limit the fade and will look at some of your suggestions...thank you for your time!

Re: Please review my swing and comment

Your posture certainly needs some work, get that sorted first. You appear to try and swing the club too much up and down the line creating a very steep swingpath, this is cramping you through impact and forcing you to lift up and lose your spine angle.

You should work on swinging the club more around your body while keeping the club closer to the plane set at address, especially with the driver.

Take a look at these videos, I think they will help you a lot:

so with an upright swing you want to be close to the ball.....with the type of swing that the video portrays you want the ball closer to heel of left foot and farther back from address?

Don't think too much about ball distance, get your posture correct and that will take care of it's self. Get into a nice athletic position with more knee flex, bend forward from the hips so that your shoulders, knees and balls of your feet are stacked over each other, arms hanging down naturally. This should be similar for any type of swing as the club should leave and return as near to plane as possible.

In a 2 plane swing the club will form a steeper plane at the top but must drop back down to the correct plane in the downswing, you seem to be using a much too steep plane right through the swing. Try swinging more around your body like the videos and you should be able to build a golf swing that is more consistent and reliable.

Okay updated pics..I really tried to get the arc from coming way overhead...I also tilted spine back and tried to keep right shoulder down through the driver.....I still may have raised a little but I have good lag with the hands.....much more power.....I am working on your suggestions.....I found it easier to repeat with a tendency to snap hook..but 80% of the time a good consistent 250-270 drive down the middle. I am trying!

I have to be honest..balance was good. I held the pose and then fell back on my right foot..

One thing that just jumps out at me is the right hand grip. You have it quite a bit under the grip. I would like to see it where the palm of your right hand is on TOP of the grip, not from the side.

This should help in the downswing where you really get the right arm disconnected from your torso in frame 3. If you have it more on top, then you are able to maintain the right elbow's hinge longer creating more lag and thus more power without doing anything other then this simple change. You should see a lower ball flight and might even begin to see the ability to draw the ball!

yeah it def looks to be a weak grip. that will be the next step....hoprfully fine consistency

                              That's looking better, well done.

Your posture at address is still wrong though. Your shoulders are way ahead of your feet and this is causing you to fall forwards and lift in compensation at impact.

I would like to see a line drawn at address that passed from the back of your shoulders that touched the front of your knees and the balls of your feet. You need to flex your knees more to achieve this.

Please look at the picture of Ernie down the line at address here (From the picture posted by Avid Golfer).

Greg is spot on with the way your right arm gets away from your body in the downswing.
