  • Right Hand on backswing

First off, I believe I have a good neutral grip to start with so I don't think this is my problem. My problem is that on the back swing I tend to let my right hand/thumb pad come off of the club/left thumb and I believe this is causing me to regrip on the downswing and have inconsistent contact.

So my question is...is it ok for your right hand to come off the club a bit during the backswing and at the top of the swing or should your right thumb pad always be connected with club during the entire swing? If the latter, can anyone suggest a good drill or training aid to help with this problem?

    Thank you.

    Re: Right Hand on backswing

    hi
one thing that Lee Trevino use to do was give the club a quick squeeze when at full backswing, it meant both hands were firmly on the grip and it also relaxed his hands on the downswing and stopped him gripping to hard.
i have tried this and do it mostly with my practice swing as it gets me to grip the club with just the right amount of pressure.
    worth giving it a try?
    cheers

I would suggest that your right hand should stay on the grip throughout, your re-gripping can alter the clubface angle.

A drill is to grip a long tee between your left thumb and right thumb pad and ensure you do not let it slip out during the swing.

      Hope this helps.

I have been told that if yopu lose your grip on the back swing, during the down swing your hands will regrip the club. When this happens, the regripping process usually leads to excessive use of the forearm muscles, which causes a problem with the release at impact. GJS
