  • Greg J Willis' Walking Drill

It had my attention today. No, I didn't watch his video today. But as I was chipping balls and simply swinging a club around, I started thinking about the walking drill. And feeling my weight shift. And how out of balance I felt doing the walking drill.

I remember Greg mentioning that we shift our weight naturally, and all the time - just in walking.

So I tried to feel my weight shift, just while I walked. I couldn't. I have a terrible sense of feel, apparently. So, in true classic golf-drill fashion, I simply put all my weight on one side and tried walking. Did you know there are only 3 options if you won't allow your weight to shift? You either have to hop, fall, or shift a little weight in order to walk. Interesting, I know! So, now I'm convinced that the weight shift is more or less automatic; and that I've been over-exaggerating it in my own swing.

So, I played men's night tonight - 9 holes in the evening - and didn't try to shift my weight, I simply let it happen.

I've never hit more full swing shots in a round both cleanly and in balance. Ever. Swings felt rhythmic - fluid and languid, I finished fully on my left side and in balance. My only issue was that I pulled about half the shots, the others were straight (or had about 5 yards of movement).

So, long story short, the weight shift needn't be forced. I'm sure I'll end up learning that nothing in the golf swing need be forced.

I know for sure if I deliberately try and shift my weight on the down swing too much its a disaster usually very fat shots or serious wayward direction.

If I watch my swing in a mirror/video there is a natural weight shift without thinking about it.

                42,

Greg has got some good stuff. He was the first to teach me 'hey, quit trying to pick the ball clean off the turf and get those hands in front of it' (paraphrased) BTW, this is the right hand drill.

Concerning weight shift. I played baseball at LSU in college. That means I should know how to hit a ball. In golf, I have always tried to shift my weight as the first move down. This is what the so called experts say. I agree with- the let it happen. I feel like if I just turn my belly button and swing, the weight shift will happen. For 30 years my lower body has been way out in front and I release too soon and have no power. For me, the new feeling is that I stay on my back foot longer. Greg has also helped me, especially with the door drill. He knows what things are key to make a good golf swing without getting so technical. Thanks Greg and I enjoy reading this forum.

I'm with you, redsox. Played baseball from the time I could walk. Ended up being a pretty good hitter - never thought about my swing, just waited for the pitch to come and swung at it.

At this point, I honestly couldn't tell you what I'm doing in my swing (and I don't want to know!) All I know is that since I've stopped worrying about my weight shift; "trusting" that it'll happen for me, my ballstriking has become much, much better - in all full swing scenarios.

Keeping the arms and torso connected through the swing will help weight shift to happen and to direct power to the ball. Someone said that if a light was shining out of the middle of their chest it would shine on their hands through most of the swing and that to me is a great way to consider it. Letting the body outrace the arms by trying to shift weight too fast destroys a swing.

I figured that one out on my own - that the hands actually stay in front of the body for the most part. It took me a while, though.
