  • An Error on My Part

    Hello all,

I would just like to correct myself on a comment I made recently in a now closed thread.

At the time the discussion was covering all aspects of the swing and how it would/should feel and look.

I was in disagreement with BrianW when I stated that one should feel open to the target at impact, with shoulders slightly open, torso more so (that rhymes!) and hips the most.

Whilst I would still hold up that this is how it LOOKS, the feeling that BrianW came up with was to FEEL like you face the ball with the shoulders at impact. This is the point I disagreed with.

Turns out I was wrong and he was right.

I started really slapping it like a little girl over the weekend and was absolutely disgusted with the shots I was hitting. So I spent 4 hours on the range yesterday re-building my swing and indeed found that my body was out-racing my arms. No lag, no power, open clubface. Yuck.

When I swung to face the club from start to finish and feel like I had square shoulders at impact I had lag, power, timing and a full release. The ball compression was great and I hit shots I hadn't hit for a while. 185 yard high 6 irons held into a firm left to right wind.

So, thank you Brian and apologies. It just goes to show that the smallest seed of the wrong thought can (and does) ruin a swing.

We are, of course, hitting a ball sideways in relation to our posture. So it makes absolute sense to keep the shoulders more square through impact to help us start the ball along our target line and get everything working in sync.

Typically, I twisted my knee playing tennis last night so I can't go and work on it today. And to rub it in, it's the best day of the year so far.

    Hi Neil,

No problem mate, I know we can have different perceptions with our golf swings, quite often what we think we are doing and what we actually do are not the same.

I know that I have suffered from getting my torso rotating ahead of my arms through impact and the result is an open clubface that pushes the ball and prevents solid contact. In another thread I have been discussing keeping the arms and chest synchronised through the swing as it keeps you on plane and square to the ball. I like two analogies for this: The shoulders are the rudders of ball flight. And: If a light was shining out of the middle of your chest it should be lighting your hands through most of the swing.

Another simple drill to ingrain the correct relationship is where you grip well down the clubshaft at address and hold the end in line with the belly button. As you turn back keep the shaft pointing to the belly button until you get round to 90 deg, then lift the club to the top. On the way back down the shaft is brought back to the belly button halfway down and kept there back to impact and 90 deg into the follow through where it lifts to the top again.

Interesting thought... If pro veterans have trouble with their swings sometimes, this is greatly magnified with us amateurs... One is lucky to have a consistent, reliable and repeatable swing to stand the test of time.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

It cant be, yours is! As matter of fact it is one of the rudest postings I have ever read (And that's saying something). The person you refer to is one of the brightest and articulate posters on this board, what do people like you get out of rubbishing others

            hi Brian
i thought jbrunk was joking and did not think he was serious.
like you i have always found Neil's posts to be well thought out and well written and have always held him in high esteem.
if jbrunk was not joking then it is the rudest post i have seen on here. there seems no reason for him being rude as Neil said nothing to be attacked for??????
            cheers

              Bill,

If it was meant as a joke then there is something amiss with my sense of humour as I cannot see anything funny.

OK, seems like it is a quote from a film. I would like to think it is my Englishness or lack of film credo that has created the confusion and the words were not meant as an insult.

I think the last eight words an the cheesy grin gives away the intent of the post. It's a compliment................I hope! I wasn't offended at any point. In fact, I did laugh. But I haven't seen any Billy Madison.

                  Cheers Jbrunk!

And thanks for the kind comments in my defence, should they be needed!

                    Oops!

Sorry for any misinformation, I totally meant that as a joke, Neil and others. I do have a crazy sense of humor, and I love movies. It felt like the right time to use the quote.

I don't visit the site as much as I used to so maybe that let it drag on longer than it should have.

                    Cheers to all.
