  • Shape of swing

    Ok, usually I slice the ball (sometimes very wickedly). I had worked on my swing with a mirror and got my swing on the right plane. But I still hit slices.

    So one day at the course with my friend he let me try his medicus dual hinged 2000 club. I found that the only way for this club to work was to swing very upright. It looks very strange. But I decided to go the range and give it a go. So I worked on keeping it upright and bam all my drives were straight, i was hitting my pitching wedge 140 (with the wind at my back, but still). So my question is should I stay with this unorthodox swing or correct it to an aesthetically pleasing swing? I mean could this be harmful to my golf in the long run.

    I'd appreciate any replies.

    There are so many aids out there. As a fun joke, by buddies made a tape of me wearing every aid we had. It took 30 minutes to get it all on. I explained every aid as I put it on and what it how it was supposed to help. When I tried to hit the shot, it went 45 yards with a little slice. (all this inspired by "Tin Cup" when Renee Russo had all those training aids on)

    Training aids have a purpose when used correctly. They are meant to show proper fundamentals. It sounds like you had a flaw in one of your fundamentals causing slicing and you took your own approach to making the training aid work. This is defiantly the wrong way to go about it. 2 wrongs make a really bad wrong and the end does not justify the means because you may have been able to manipulate enough of the rest of the fundamentals to make it work, but as you guessed by even asking the question in this forum, you have gotten further away from a better swing.

    The medicus is designed to show proper hand action and help in tempo during the takeaway. If you are having to make changes to your stance and uprightness, then you are not getting out what the medicus is trying to emphasize.

    So, I would go back to your comfortable stance and start over with the medicus (and any training aid). Use it with the directions it came with. If it did not come with them, be very cautions. Find out exactly what the aid is trying to help you with and keep the focus on that part only. If you find yourself having to manipulate other aspects of your swing, stop.

    You can always see a pro and ask for their take on the aid, and have them demonstrate it. Chances are you are not using it correctly and this will help you out.

      sorry Greg, I was not clear enough on my post. What I meant was that with a upright swing plane I hit the ball straight. My posture setup etc is the same. I was wondering if I should keep my swing like this or swing on the "correct" plane.
