  • Hooking problems

For years I've pushed the ball. I've never been able to draw it.

I think I've sorted the pushing thing. It was to do with my allignment. I had my shoulders aiming right when I thought I was aiming straight. The reason for this was I had my hands too far on the top of the golf club. I didn't choke down enough. Now I choke down the club a bit and my aiming is better. The problem is I have developed a hook, mainly with my driver.

So I'm wondering what causes a hook ?

I've tried weakening my left hand grip a touch without much success. I'm hitting it quite well and it's certainly an improved from pushing the ball but with new and better aiming, I have created some different problems (Hooking !)

    Thanks !

    Re: Hooking problems

A hook happens when the clubface is closed at impact, a pull hook happens when the swingpath is pointing left and the clubface is closed. To rectify it you have to square the clubface and swingpath.

Take a look at my article on shot shaping, it may help you to understand better, you can then work out the solution:

Try moving the ball back a bit... Or try slowing down your swing, too... Also hit some deliberate slices. You'll need to experiment on the driving range on this.

        Thanks !

I've just played. I hit the ball great and very long. My problem holes were the ones were a draw didn't suit the hole. I will try to hit some fades at the driving range.

Your clubfaced is too closed for the plane you are swinging on, and you are swinging on a plane that is too far from the inside.

You need to fix the plane first. Probably by adding more 'up' in your backswing instead of so much 'around'. On you dowswing you need to learn to swing left after impact. Try to feel that you are swinging your hands into your left pocket,(assuming you are right handed).

As for the grip, I prefer a neutral grip where the back of your left hand would match the clubface as they both point to the sky.

          Can you post some video?
