I've heard a lot of people say that it is best to use an open stance. Can someone explain what an open stance is and what advantage an open stance gives me?

Open stance?

Re: Open stance?
Feet pointing to the left (rh) of the target. You square up the hips / shoulders and blade, but just the line of the back foot and front foot would point slightly to the left of the target.
It has the advantage of allowing your rotation through the ball to happen a bit more freely. The front foot's position is already opening up the hips, so the hips have an easier rotating into impact.
It is nothing mind blowing, just meant to help those that are having a hard time hitting blocks out to the right.

Re: Open stance?
Ok thanks for the help. I push a lot of my shots, so it sounds like it could help. It sounds like the most common use for an open stance is to compensate for a problem with someone's swing. If that is true, then I would think that most pros don't use an open stance. Is this the case?

Re: Open stance?
The feet-line both point to the left of the target...it is not the toe flairing out if this is what you think is the "opening" of the stance. You naturally do want the leading foot to open up about 25 degrees...but the back foot should stay square.

Re: Open stance?
hi
with my open stance my right foot is about 4 to 6 inches back from the line to the target. i set the club face between the line to my target and the line of my open stance. so if my stance is about 30% open then my club face looks about 15% to the left. so it looks as if i have a closed club face.
when i swing i swing down the line 15% open and NOT down the line of my feet and it feels like a push the shot as your hand don't turn over or swing back around. this keeps the face open and stops it closing and gives me a wonderful high fade.
by closing the club face more you fade the ball more. i know this sounds wrong but that is how it works. so if i wan't a big fade i will have my feet about 35% open and my club face looking about 20% to the left and i will swing down the line about 15 to 20% to the left of the target so i start the ball out left and let it fade back in about 20 to 25 feet.
i swing down the line i want the ball to start and i know how much it will fade so i know just where to set the club face and where to set my feet.
its a easy way to play and not as hard as it sounds. most pros do it for there sand shots and chips and pitches. they all open there stance but swing on a line between there target and the line of there feet. you do as Greg says and set your shoulders and hips in line with where you want to start the ball out.
this is the Trevino system and Mindy Blake also uses the open stance system.
here is a picture of Richard Wax using the Blake system and if you look you will see in picture 2 "Backswing" and picture 4 "downswing" how both look similar and also picture 1 "set up" and 5 "impact" how his open stance helps and how the set up and impact look almost the same.
you will also see his hand dont turn over till the ball is well on its way.
cheers
