Who does the best golf research?

Is it some University? Magazine? Clubmaker or a brand?
Where to look for latest innovations and knowledge about a golf swing?

(Or is research any good? Maybe best knowledge comes from just people interested in the game? and from sharing their long experience?)

Not spoke for a while, hope you are well.

A great question too: The answer lies within ourselves, I sincerely believe that we get better by trial and error, for the begginer fine tuition and basics is the way to go to get started. After a time then it's up to the individual with trial and error, this is why no two tour swings are the same.

There has been much talk about three skills, alot by me simply because of the effect it has had on my game that's all, but the theory behind 3SKs is the answer to your question, of all the different and alot of weird swings amoung the best in the world they only have one thing in common 'How they apply the clubface to the ball' How you get there is completely irelevent.

Ian, I'm fine. Thanks for asking. Lots of golf, but not much improvement:-)
... but I have a feeling that I'm slowly getting more and more comfortable with my game.

I think I'll wait for the 3SK's DVD.

I think that everyone has a important role in interpreting information. "You have to own your swing." Research, pro's, instructors and peers have an important role in feeding "raw" material - a.c.a information - to us for us to test and learn.

What is the best source for you? Who can use research? Or does it have to maturitate through couches and tour professionals to become useful?
Is there any real research done about golf?

There was some great research done by Alastair Cochran & John Stobbs on the golf swing and related matter. Their book "Search for the Perfect Swing" although fairly old now is a fascinating piece of work that you may find worth reading.

and also Swing like a pro by Dr. Ralph Mann & Fred Griffin.
also, "the golfing machine!" by Hommer Kelley. it a really hard read even for golf nuts but has so much information and is rather expensive now.

"The Golfing Machine" I have and read it. Can't say I've understood everything and do not agree on everything. Geometry is correct and math is done right. Can't arque about it - but there might be more to learning than knowing the "numbers".

if you want something a bit different try Trevino's, "Swing my way?"
another book about the one and two plane swing is, "the Plane truth for golfers!" by Hardy & Andrisani.
i have found books the best way to learn other than going to a golf teaching school like Leadbetters or Pelz or Faldo.s if in UK.
most of what you read is basics from Hogan's 5 fundamentals and a different slant put on it.

I read a lot, I look up articles on the web, I talk to people, I play and work things out, I use this site.

I think the information is spread out there. If you are interested in it then you have to dig it out. The subject matter is also very diverse and may fit in with one persons general beliefs and not another's.

The attached site is the result of one persons hard work in compiling a lot of information and presenting it to support his thoughts.

A picture or more to the point a video is worth a thousand words. YouTube is a great resource. Many fine videos available and all free. The Swing Academy is pretty good resource too.

Mind Swings: Thinking Way to Better Golf by Richard Masters and John Burns

The authors argue that if you have ever hit “that shot” then you already know all that you need to know about the swing; you just have to let yourself perform.

I think they overstate their case a tad but since reading (three times) the book my game is slowly (I'm not that good at "letting go") but steadily improving; for the 3 Skills boys on here I also thought the two concepts matched up pretty well.

I ordered the book and it'll be here next week.

I share your troubles on letting go. I think I do not trust my swing enough - to just let it happen. When I try to be relaxed, I get sloppy and hit a huge slice or a hook. ( I've experience a relaxed and well timed swing so I know how it feels and I know I can do it - but it's only one or two shots in a round:-)

( I've experience a relaxed and well timed swing so I know how it feels and I know I can do it - but it's only one or two shots in a round:-)

Good luck with it; like many things I don't expect the ideas "work" for everyone. Doing it is also more difficult that reading about it but when you do (as Ian H puts it I think) get yourself out of the way of your swing the results are impressive.
