  • club at 90 degrees

    Hi all
I am just wondering who like me is unable to get their club and arm at a 90 degree angle in the BS. I am about five degrees short and I think it is affecting my DS making me release the club too early. I have the club as much as possible in the fingers of my left hand and resting against my thumb. I am not sure what to do or how to fix it. Its like my thumb is restricting it. Any info would be greatly appreciated

What sort of grip do you have? Is your left thumb directly on top of the club or a little towards the back of the club? Are you hitting the ball alright?

Hmmm... I wish I could see your grip! More often than not the grip restricts the wrist & hand movement.

If you hold the club in the fingers of the left hand you should be able to get the club to 90*. I wonder if you don't have a mobility issue in your wrists? Do you have full range of movement normally?

You know what a good drill is? It occurs to be that you might not be executing the movement correctly. Do this and see whether it works and use it as a drill / pre-swing rehersal:

      1. Grip the club with your hand seperated and swing back focussing on getting your thumbs to point straight up to the sky when your arms reach parallel to the ground. That's the movement you need to replicate in your swing...

      2. Now do the same drill with a normal grip and you should be able to get into the same position i.e. thumbs pointing straight upto the sky.

If you can't do this then your grip is restricting your movement.

I hope this helps. You know where we are if you need more help on this.

I was messing around a little bit and got it to 90 degrees but I have to work it a bit to get it there. The way I got it there was with the grip that I am posting now. Do you think its too much in the fingers ? Thanks a TON for your help Oh, ya I am hitting ball straight but i have a major problem with hitting behind the ball all the time.

By most standards that it quite a strong grip but it shouldn't cause you any problems in getting the club pointing skywards when your arms reach parallel to the ground.

What I'd like you to do is:
          (1) setup to a ball as you normally would
          (2) now lift your torso up (as in stand up) bringing your hands and club with you so that your arms are out straight in front of you at a little lower than shoulder height
          (3) flip the club up so it is pointing skywards
          (4) now turn your shoulders 90* and see if you can maintain that position
if you can do this, you probably have mobility problems in your "real swing" that could be caused by lack of mobility in the lower arms or the muscles on the side of your chest.

If you can do the excercise, perhaps you're gripping the club with too much pressure and that is restricting your range of movement?

          Again, I hope this helps!
