i still think Trevino was the best ever striker of a ball as he did it under the pressure of top tournament golf but think your talking about Moe Norman.

The best ball striker ever (Not the best golfer) didn't hit a ball out of bounds for 11 years, used the same tee for two years, had 17 holes in one, three scores of 59, four scores of 61, and over 30 course records during his career, hit 1,500 drives in a little over 7 hours, all of which where within 15 yards of one another and hit over 3 million golf balls in his life.

I go through a dozen tees a round. I believe that Norman, even if he played the courses I play, would still be using the same tee.

This touches on the other subject, as to what creates distance. Norman was never renowned for distance, but when he was younger, he was out there with th rest. He always hit the ball in the sweet spot.

I think Hogan has alot to offer golfers in terms of his swing and attitude towards the game. A previous poster mentioned him and his swing compared to todays top golfers as cold pizza.
The thing is that in those days people like Hogan as we all know did not have the same technology as today.However I recall watching on sky TV, past golf challenges ranging back to the 50's. In relation to driving, although they were playing with the old prosimmon types of driver, they could still hit the ball longer than some of todays tour players, 300 plus yards. Player, Trevino, Palmer,Golden Bear, hogan and a number of others.They still hit low scores, albeit I know the courses are made longer today.The players of yesterday did not have the same technological advances in science enjoyed by you and I and the current breed of tour player.

we have to remember also the changes in the golf ball over the years, you only have to go back to 1972 and the smaller British ball and how it did not fly as high as the American bigger ball.
i remember Peter Alliss and 3 other British pro back in the late 60s playing St Andrews after the open, two of the players had clubs and balls from the 30s and two had present day clubs and the gave the older club players 14 shots. what the found was they could not reach most of the par 4 hitting driver, 3 wood and then sometimes as much as a 3 iron. the main reason was the ball. the just could not get it up in the air. the result many more bunkers came in play most off then the newer iron player never even though about.
the result shocked all 4 of them and the older club played did not break 100 the modern player (ie 1964) both returned scores in the high 70.
the old clubs and ball meant it was more a game where the ball flew 50% and then run 50% and there was a lot more rub of the green but it was rub of the fairway where the humps and bumps really changed your luck where you ball ended up. with the newer clubs and ball they hit the ball higher and carried the ball more and this was before the America high fly ball.
it was not that they could not hit the distance but the humps and bumps and bunkers came into much much more than with the then modern clubs.

I have not seen the footage you refer to. But I appreciate what you are saying. I was refering to footage of 50's onwards, the challenge matches were screened in the UK on the golf channel.They were all filmed in America, some of these guys hit the ball the same distance as some of today's tour pros, amazing. The top players at that time played with out dated putters. They all had this break in the wrist style of putting.You know the type. But man they could nail putts just as good as todays pros. The putters they used then were simplistic in design, they did not have the same computer design technology of today.

If someone was to ask my opinion on who was the best golfer of all time then I would have to say Tiger Woods. I can appreciate the difference in technology now compared to that of yesterday. However I can double flip the coin and we can on one hand refer to those who were disadvantaged in the past ie did not have the same technology, however we could also argue that there are probably tour players today who would no doubt still perform well with the old technology.I personally think Woods with his talent would still play under par with old technology. IMO he is the greatest player ever to pick up a club.There is no doubt in my mind.There again that is a different matter and way off topic from this thread. I am going to shut up now and get off my soapbox.

i remember i think it was 1972 after the open at Muirfield Jack Nicklaus and Ben Crenshaw played the 9 holes at musselburgh old course on the Monday after and the had hired old clubs from the old course. they played the first with the old 20s golf ball but the both struggled, the rest of the holes they used the modern American ball that was new over here at the time. i think the par'd 4 holes between them and that was using hickey shafted clubs and they did drive the ball a good distance with the old club but had the new ball. Ben Crenshaw dressed up in the old cloths that you would wear back in the 20 and had +4s.
there was only about 20 or 30 people walked round with them and i only saw it as i was play the course at the time but only watched from the 5th to the 9 hole as i did not know about it till i saw the big group of people. i was so impressed with them using such old clubs and i think Jack found it hard work but Ben seemed to love every second of it.

It should be mentioned that the old wood head drivers were about 13 degree loft, yet because of the uniform (versus low of the new equipment) center of gravity, the trajectory tended to be low and penetrating. There were players such as Nicklaus who could still hit them higher as well than the other players, so he was one of the longer hitters.

So, I suppose it matters what course they were playing, as to distance. If it's a baked out hard pan surface, like many links courses could be, the ball will roll out.
