    Re: Reverse Overlap Grip.

Bumping this thread up. I've used this grip with varying results. Tonight, whilst watching the PGA, I couldn't help noticing that Luke Donald's grip looked as though he is using the ROG. Can anyone confirm this please?

Has anyone persevered with this grip? I have developed it now so that the little finger (pinky) doesn't get crushed.

I tried it for a while but found that my hands were acting a bit independant of each other so I settled on the interlock which seems to suit my hands. I had used the Vardon for many years but it produced some nasty calluses on my fingers.

          Re: Reverse Overlap Grip.

A grip is a very personal thing. I've tried the lot. In the early days I used to change grips when things went wrong or just copy someone elses grip just because he seemed to be hitting it well.

I actually tried the ROG before I read about it. It was never, and still isn't, considered as one of the alternatives. Being a left handed person but playing all ball games right handed I find that taking the left index finger out of play, and reducing the right little finger crush, helps balance the connection.

Same with so called Stack & Tilt. It occurred to me many years ago that if I dispensed with the weight shift on the back swing maintaining my set-up weight on the leading foot then I virtually eliminated hitting the ground first and my slice reduced to a very slight fade. Then I read about S&T a couple years ago. Like Aaron Baddeley, I use some of the methodology but not all.

I'm happy with the ROG and S&T aspects that I've incorporated in my game.

            Re: Reverse Overlap Grip.

I have experimented with every grip that you could imagine to create a consistant swing. Since I had been a baseball player, later a fast pitch softball player, my hands are very quick, especially the right hand (I swing right handed). I started using the reverse overlap grip on chip and pitch shots (L 2nd finger over the R 5th finger) and noticed an improvement in feel, control, etc. I then progressed to longer wedge and short iron shots, finally using the grip on the Driver. For me, this grip is wonderful. From 150 yards in I expect to be on the green or darn close all the time. Swing smoothly and don't force it. I think the grip allows the right hand to maintain a cocked wrist position longer, so I rarely hit it left. At first I noticed a slight loss in distance (1/2 club), but this gradually improved. I rip the hybrids pretty much dead straight and normally hit the 4 hybrid 200-210 in warmer weather. I never had as much consistancy, even though I normally carry a 5 to 8 handicap. At age 67 I still hit the driver 250+ yards, so the grip does not significantly reduce distance. I am glad that people are starting to talk about alternative methods of ball striking. For those with fast hands and a scary tendency to yank it left, this grip may prevent a call to the suicide hotline. I thank those who brought up this topic.

              Re: Reverse Overlap Grip.

I am a righty lefty. Was out in the back yard today hitting into a net. The results were less than impressive. Out of frustration I switched to a reverse overlap. Immediately felt better, better ball position at address, better hand location on the shaft (lower), much better release, better control, better everything.

I was so excited about this new grip that I rushed into the house and Googled, "Reverse Overlap Grip Golf". Of course it led me here. I began reading the second comment in this thread (Russ) and thought, "This is exactly my experience and exactly my issues." I also thought, "Man, this guy sure communicates well."

As I got near the bottom of the comment, I noticed it was written by Russ. Then I remembered.

              That's me!!!!

I wrote this 3 years ago. Groundhog's day again.

Believe it or not I had quit using the grip and begun it again. Golf is a funny sport.

                Re: Reverse Overlap Grip.

Let me just add this one thing. Right handed golfers put all 5 fingers of the left (off) hand on the club. If you are left handed (playing right handed) and ROL you are putting all 5 fingers of your right (off) hand on the club!

It is an amazing set of bonuses that come from this simple reversal of overlap! I recommend it for every left hander who plays right handed (or vice versa).
I have been teaching this grip for years. One thing to add, it is imperative that the thumb of the left hand doesn't interfere with the fingers of the right (for R handers). See these pictures...

I recommend it for anyone who wants to naturally steer the club with their dominant hand. Meee!

The interlock grip can look like a reverse overlap. Many pro golfers have the pinky buried a little more. I would guess that's what Luke's doing. There is one pro that uses the ROG but forget his name at the moment.

Hello Patrick. You are correct about Luke Donald. His right index is not fully interlocked and at some angles it does look like his left index is sitting on top of his right "pinkie".

I tend to let my left index overlap my right ring finger with hardly any pressure at all. This seems to prevent the right pinkie crush that happens when the left index does overlap the it. Whether it's "Right or Wrong", I like the right hand to feel dominant in the hitting area leaving the left, that has just pulled the club down, to now rotate to finish the swing with the club head going behind me. By rotating the left I find I have eliminated my push fade. Straight or slight draw is now the norm.

By the way, I cannot open the links to the pictures you provided. Seems like they were never authorised by Admin.

                          FYI

I pic of Luke Donald using the interlock grip.

Not to be confused with the reverse overlap putting grip.

Hi Bill & Greg. Thanks for the information and pictures.

To Patrick, your pictures show all of the left hand fingers on the grip not one of them overlaps a finger on the right hand.

Should I try to upload a couple of pictures of my grip to compare?

                              Hi Wessex,

when you overlap with the left index finger, the right pinky is still visible from the face on viewpoint.

Please post your pictures for comparison and I'll post some more detailed angles later.
