I can't seem to ever Drive Straight or Far!!!Help me

Okay so I don't play golf alot. I went to a golf outing yesterday and had fun. I love to play golf and try but I stink. I hit some good balls , I can putt good thats all. Here is my problem I have a cheap set of golf clubs. My driver head not the face is basically dented in. It's as if when I come down with my swing I don't hit the ball ever with the face but with the top of my club. I have a major dent on top of my golf club and can't ever swing straight or even flush on the face of the club. Am I twisting my wrists or not twisting them ??I do the same thing with my irons. Any tips would be great . I want to try and improve my game. Im not looking for a miracle but some help. Thanks alot.

Use the hips to rotate the club. Think as the arms as pieces of wood attached to the body and they get their ROTATIONAL motion from the hips.

Don't slide the hips in a lateral direction but ROTATE them as if you are in a barrel.

It's going to take a lot of hard work. Start with taking some lessons , practice what you are taught and get some clubs without dents in them.

Don't slide the hips in a lateral direction but ROTATE them as if you are in a barrel.

I don't agree with this. Your hips should be pushed forward to get your weight over the front leg, they will rotate by themselves without any conscious thought. If you only rotate them you will be forced to throw the upper body early and swing out to in.

i tend to agree with Brian that if you just turn as you were in a barrel then you don't get the weight over to the left side. i think all good swings have some lateral slid but the big "NO" is not sliding to the right on the back swing. with any lateral slid the head must say still and not slid with the hips.
when done right it feels like your singing under your head and your right shoulder feels like it swinging under you too.

I play once a week on a senior scramble. It's lot's of fun. A very nice guy who I'll call John played with us every week. Then all of a sudden he quit playing. Everyone wondered what happened to him. One of our mutual friends ran into to him and asked him why he quit playing. His reply was that "he got tired of everyone telling him what was wrong with his swing".

I think the little story shows a strong parallel with some who post here on Golf_T. You begin to feel like old John, wondering "If I make a suggestion or try to help, who is going to jump down my throat and tell me that I am wrong? Make me feel like a fool?".

Funny, right now I don't have much desire to post anymore. I guess Old John and I have a few things in common.

You seem rather sensitive to a little counter advice, I happen to believe that your suggestion he turned the hips without sliding them laterally would create more problems, sorry but I cannot express it any other way.

i was not saying you were wrong just giving a different opinion.
i have been told my swing is wrong and the way i putt is wrong and i do know what your saying. i was only giving my honest opinion and in no way meant to imply you were wrong.
i was trying to point out that if you do have a lateral shift then you must stop any shift backward on the back swing. i do think all golfers have some lateral movement even if its just the shift of weight from the inside of there right foot to the outside of the left foot.
to me it having a different view and was never saying you were wrong.

I think its great to hear different aspects from different people and their interpretation of how this feels or should be, etc. I don't think anyone should take offense on someone's interpretation or opinion. Who doesn't like a good debate.. you can learn a lot... thats what golf is all about IMO

imo, if you are new to golf the last club you should have in you hand is the driver,this club is very hard to use, so try hitting a 5 or 7 wood to start with from the tee. when you get ok with this then try a 3wood, just a thought, good luck!!

There's a difference posting in an online golf forum asking for swing advice and receiving alot of possibly unwanted advice on the course. One of the most interesting things about golf is the endless learning curve regardless of your level (check out how much time Vijay spends on the driving range).

Swinging with your feet together (or like your in a barrel), or on your knees, or in a hula hoop or with whatever of the millions of techniques which exist help you improve then good for you. Internet is a good, cheap place to start.
