  • wrist cock, early or late?

just working on some stuff at the range last night (sh*nk cures) and started to swing employing a delayed wrist cock.

thankfully didnt hit one single shank, all shots had a slight draw shape and i seemed to compress the ball a lot better

could this be yet another band-aid or could it be a delayed wrist cock better suits my swing tempo?

    Hi Slats,

I prefer an early wrist break (right at the start of the takeaway) this gets the club on plane, stops it being taken too far inside, stops the wrists rolling open and get the wrist cock set properly.

Like Joe Dante's system explains: http://www.newgolfswing.com/newgolfswing05.php

I also prefer an early wriist break, but like all other golf moves, I try not to overdo it.

This gives food for thought. Does anyone set the wrist break at address? Is this possible or advisable? Or is it just a partial wrist break at address?

Both probably Ian, or, there again, neither.

I'm coming to the conclusion that when things go wrong there's no point going to the range to work on swing changes and fixes and we should just carry on doing what we do until the problem goes away of its own accord.

        That's my advice anyway.

Re: wrist cock, early or late?

As most will be aware by now that I am a bit of a GITT (Golf Information Technology Tourist) and tend to try many different things, some I retain others I discard as unhelpful to me.

Over the years I have worked on and three different swings that I keep in my back pocket. I pull one out when the one I am currently using seems to have gone off me for the time being.

          The three types are:

The Leslie King style that works through a number of check points and is based on a fairly typical two plane type swing that allows a free swing of the left arm.

The one plane swing that works in a more rotary around the body motion with a little more spine tilt and less lower body action. I also have a subset of this that is based on the Moe Norman swing where the arms are kept straighter and the swing staying more on plane throughout.

The third is the Joe Dante type swing that uses a very early wrist setting. This swing although not as easy to use is fairly bulletproof for me and tends to erradicate many of the little faults that creep in with the others at times. It can be used effectively for pitching and chipping just as well as the longer shot.

It's an early break right at the start of the backswing. Like this:

                Hi Brian,
Do you use all of Joe's methods he suggests? I am just curious. I tried the early wrist cock he suggested and it made a huge difference. I was pretty surprised... just looks a little weird I am getting into reading what he has to say about the DS now....

                  Hi Dano,

Yes, when using that swing I use all his methods although the rest are fairly conventional (head behind ball, downswing lead with lateral hip slide etc)

                    Hey Slater,

I have a couple of points to make.

                    1. Early or late set is not the reason/cure for the shanks. Sorry buddy.

                    2. I don't think it matters which one you use. The 'late set' will be more powerful because it leads to more torque on the shaft and more late speed. (See Sergio and Jack).

                    3. I also believe that with a late set, because of increased torque, it is more difficult to control the clubface through impact. If I were you, I would make sure I got the shanks fixed first if you want to employ the late set.

                    Be good,

                    JB

                      hi jb
you are absolutely right on that point!

been doing some more work tonight and have pinpointed the problem!

i have become complacent when setting up and now realise i have had poor posture of late and also too much weight on my toes

i made sure my feet were more evenly planted and whether using early or late wrist cock the results were the same..........solid hit shots!

                        That is great to hear.

One thing to remember. Lagging the hosel is the cause of the shanks. You want to create an environment that makes it easy for you to lag the sweetspot, not the hosel. One of those things may be posture and balance.

                          Hi slats,

Coach tells me not to worry about wrist cock. Shoulders should take club away. The wrists will look after themselves.

                          Just me 2 p - in Aussie my 2 c.
