  • Iron Trajectory?

Hello all, I am new to this forum and have searched for answers to this, but could not find it. So I hope this isn't an unnecessary thread, but no matter what I do I can not keep my iron shots at a nice low trajectory. I am pretty good with my irons. The majority of the time I make great contact with the ball and get great distances with all of my irons up to my 3 iron, but I hit them so high. It usually isn't too far off of target, but I feel as though I would have much better control with a lower shot. So any tips on how to accomplish this would be much appreciated.

IMO, at this point you need some video to check your impact position. Great distance could be a function of swingspeed even though you're flipping through impact.

Also, for the uneducated, if you're playing older clubs your irons will fly higher than your buddies' new irons.

You could always move the ball back in your stance for a quick fix...

Thanks for the response. Well, right now I am playing Nike Slingshots. I have tried putting the ball back in my stance, but it still flies high. I have been concentrating to make sure that I don't flip my hands through before contact, but maybe I am still doing it.

Part of the issue is your irons - I've yet to find a 'low trajectory game improvement' model - for GI irons they all seem to have the weight low and back (increasing trajectory). Try something with a narrower sole and a shallower cavity and see if your trajectory doesn't change.

Okay, thanks. I will try out an older set that I have.

The more upright the shaft at impact the greater the loft and higher the ball flight. Check that you have the shaft and your hands ahead of the ball at setup and impact. A rule of thumb is that the butt of the shaft is around a hands width in front of your left (or leading) thigh.

The older set may have weaker lofts (ie the current 7 iron hits as far as the old set 5 iron).

Make sure you check the lofts so that you can accurately compare trajectories.

Not sure if this will help but when try to hit lower shots i play the ball back as suggested, choke down a little on the club, press the shaft and my hands ahead of the ball. then for the swing i shorten my backswing only 3/4 then really try and trap the ball against the ground like your squeezing it. then for the follow through try and keep the back of your left hand pointing at the target and low for as long as possible. hope this helps!

I think its unlikely that you are getting great distances if you are flipping/casting the club. No amount of speed will make up for that (as I unfortunately know only too well!)

Can you describe yourself (height, weight, sex, build) and also give us your distances.

If you are truely getting good distances then I wouldnt worry about trajectory. Unless they are blowing offline its something else that is causing you to miss your targets. But remember, *everyone* misses their target*most* of the time.

                    Re: Iron Trajectory?

I am a 23 yr. old male, 6'0", and weigh around 210. I do get great distances. to give you an idea I hit my pitching wedge anywhere from 145 to 160, depending on the tempo of my swing. I do think the height causes me a problem because as hard as I try I always turn my wrists through impact at least a little. So the higher I am launching the ball the more the ball draws. Most of my shots are only about 10 to 15 yards off to the left, so I feel as though that if I could get my trajectory lower I could get the ball closer to my target.

If your ball flight is consistant, and is only 10-15 yards left, why not set up with an aim point 10-15 yards right of your target? Your distance as you stated with your PW is very good, and above average. With that distance, I don't believe you are flipping your wrists through impact. What is the lie angle of your clubs at address? Is the toe of the clubface up, down or level with the turf? If you take a divot, what does it look like? What is your stance compared to your target? Is it closed, square, or open to your target? I myself hit a very high shot, that draws left. I am quite happy with it since I have better control of my distances with each club due to the higher trejectory shot, which cuts down on the roll after the carry. I golf on many different courses through out the year. The fairways are just as different as far as firmness, which causes a difference in roll after the carry. Because of this fairway issue, the higher trejectory shot works out better for me. GJS

A modern PW going about 150...

Now you've gotta decide what you want - forgiveness or trajectory control. You're playing Slingshots - CoG weight low and back. Trajectory will come down somewhat by manipulating two factors - head CoG (move it closer to the face and higher) and going with a stiffer-tipped shaft.

Your SS and contact are giving you that distance; your swing mechanics must be OK.

I`m starting to feel inferior here. Is 150 yards normal for a PW? I would be embarrassed now to tell you what club I use for 150 yards!

                            HA HA

So this PW distance makes you feel inferior? What do you make of the ridiculous yardages Garcia is hitting all his irons these days? Of course, he has that downlag and is bulked up, and his lofts are likely strengthened even beyond the already strong lofts of modern equipment (in case you still have the older equipment). In some cases, to be fair, he was also hitting off a upslope lie.

Seriously, is this the normal distance for a PW? If so, i have some work to do.
