  • Swing Help

    Hello Everyone
I have been slicing the ball my whole golf life. I just looked at my swing on video and saw my first move on the downswing is to lunge at the ball causing my head to dip and move in front of the ball at contact. I have to believe this is the cause of my slice. Can anyone give me some tips or drills on how to correct this?

    Thank you

    Hey Natejsn:

The good news is you just discovered the three worst faults of a golf swing....the bad news is it is on that video clip.

Seriously, just watching that video and the revelations there is a big step in correcting those faults. Most people never take the time to actually see what they are doing. Video is a great tool.

My guess is that you are not using your legs and shifting your weight properly. The upper body lunge throws the entire swing out of sequence and consequently moves your head around which makes solid contact almost impossible. This is comonly called hitting from the top. Usually contact is very erratic (pulls, slices, fats, thins etc.. )so if your consistently slicing then you have grooved this motion to a consistent shot pattern.

Try to get with an instructor to understand the fundementals. The foundation of the swinging motion involves good footwork and leg action so there are many threads related to that on this site. Also check out slow motion and real time swings of pros in action so you can see the correct dynamic combination of upper and lower body movement. Try to watch clips of the women pros because they swing a little slower and you can really see their great leg action (and legs for that matter). This is how the women are able to hit the ball 260 yards plus although physically ,their upper bodies are not as strong, comparable to men.

Your legs will lead your downswing not your shoulders. This will help keep your head behind the ball.

    Best of luck.

Yeah'n you are swinging "over the top"... There is a lot of reading material available for this on this website, internet and even at bookstores.

But I totally agree with Slaught that the swing should start from the ground-up... Try my fave drill, which is half-swings with the feet together to get the proper feeling.
