  • Poor iron play.

Although I am a 7-handicap golfer, I always seem to be fighting poor ball striking. It is often poor, but always consistent. What I mean by that is that I will have rounds that no matter what I seem to try I will be out on the toe all day. Other days I will be dangerously close to the hosel (and some right on it!) all day. On occasion I will spend a blessed day right in the middle and man is golf fun then. I have a great short game, which is how I maintain my handicap. My last instructor told me that a swing path that goes inside early causes my problems (at least the heel hits). That would be helpful if I could find a way to improve my path. That’s the rub! Any drills out there that might help me get my full swing on par with my short game. I was thinking that hoop thing Bob Murphy used to advertise might help, but I have not seen one in years. Thanks to anyone who can help this lost soul.

What did they tell/show you to resolve it and I hope they didn't just stop there? If they did, then I also hope it was a free lesson, otherwise get your money back.

Going inside early on the takeaway is caused by the hands taking the club back first.
Use this drill to fix the proper use of the hands and what to do in the takaway:

      Thanks Greg,

There is no question in my mind you are right. I have not been able to work on the drill as yet. Our range has been closed from all the rain up here in the northeast. I have been working on the single hinge of the wrist (up and down as opposed to side to side) and the results have been unbelievable. My ball flight has come down; I am making much more solid contact and am hitting it dead straight! I think this has been a thing that I have struggled with each spring as I try to regain some form and I regress back to randomly through the season, which kills my consistency. Being aware of the problem will be of great help. I will keep you posted. But again, thanks a million!
      John
