  • changed grip question

I recently changed my grip from a strong grip which produced a draw with all my irons...at times it would be uncontrollable approaching some greens....i changed to a weaker grip and booyah my shots were going straight to approaching greens (even with a driver)...

My issue...now at times i push to the right....i would like to believe that both extremes are maybe from improper swing path, but i don't know...i can still draw the ball but i must actually play it more with alignment and crossing forearms after impact

what should i do...both actually feel comfortable but i need consistency from swing path on down

    please help

what are causing my pushes when i use the weaker grip?
what causes overdrawing when i use the stronger grip?

    Re: changed grip question

    Try this drill:

Take your normal grip on a 5 iron, stand upright and hold your arms straight out in-front of you. Take a full swing so the club rotates around your body like swinging a baseball bat. Now return your arms straight out in-front without moving your grip and see if the clubface is square.

If it is square then your grip is fine. If it is open then strengthen you grip a little then try again. If it is closed then weaken your grip a little and try again.

keep doing this and making small adjustments until you can consistently return the clubface square. Lock this grip into your memory-base and use it.

      Re: changed grip question

All other aspects being in order, if the common denominator for the two different results is your grip, the reason may be the rotation, or lack of rotation, of the forearms.

Check the position of the clubhead through the backswing and at the top, using the two grips.

With the strong grip, the necessity to rotate the forearms is lessened, as they are already rotated somewhat. In this case, if you over-rotate the arms, you will see the clubhead overly closed at the hiphigh and at the top positions. That may result in overdrawing.

With the weak grip, you may not be rotating the forearms to square the clubhead, resulting in the push.
