  • double hit

    Hi everyone ,
I have just purchased a 60 degree wedge and am having trouble with double hitting the ball. I am a relative beginner. Is there a simple answer?
    Thanks

    Re: double hit

    The usual suspects:

Too big a backswing, and flipping your hands at the ball. The big backswing causes you to decelerate, and the flippy hands saves the shot. However, this also means that the clubhead is hanging around about the same time the ball is starting it's flight.

Check your technique, and make sure that your hands are leading the clubhead at impact.

      Re: double hit

I've never had the problem, but I would think that you can double hit the ball if the clubhead is moving upward, as in a scooping motion, so it intercepts with the ball's flight. This would be particularly the case, if you are also at the same time quitting on the swing and decelerating.

Because of the loft of the club, you can take a fairly aggresive swing through (not scooping) the ball using the effective loft, and not be afraid of overhitting, whether it's a 6" chip over the fringe or a hip high chip for longer carry. For the hip high chip, on the follow through I tend to rotate the body, along with the swinging of the arms, so the clubhead clears left of the ball flight anyways

I'd say the main cause is deceleration.

      Ted.

Looks like our posts crossed LowPost42. It looks like the same observations.

You're a lucky man, Ted - I started out double hitting my short shots... and it's definitely decel and flippy hands. Now, for a short, spinny chip flippy hands are a must; however it doesn't do well combined with decel!

              Re: double hit

I tried a few different things.I played the ball out from my right foot, which means my wrists were more cocked. Opening my stance a little I accelerated through the stroke with more confidence and a smooth follow through keeping my wrists cocked. I also found I could change the distance of the shot by moving my hands up or down on the grip. No more flipping and scooping; problem seems to be fixed.
              Do I have it right?

Sounds to me like you've got it - especially if you're no longer double hitting!

i would say try and punch the ball as low as possible it will still go high but it will get rid of the scooping action

                    Re: double hit

Still double hitting occassionally. Punching the ball hard and low on some Australian courses is difficult as we don't tend to have lush coverage even around the greens. Here is what I think is happening; if the wrists become uncocked too early in a follow through, the accelerating club will catch up with the ball and bingo - six balls sun bathing on the house roof!
                    Thoughts?

                      Re: double hit

Both LowPost42 and I suggested flipping or scooping in our initial posts, which is what you are talking about, so we are in agreement, it's the possible cause.
