  • Ball Shaping

    Hi guys,

I have just got a new set of irons and in the fit out I noticed that my swing speed has increased to 95-99mph (that is a increase of 10-15mph over the last 3 months). Anyway, when I took the irons to the range I found I was starting to get a natural draw to my shots.

Now my question, is shaping the ball speed dependent and what would be the minimum speed before shaping starts to happen? Or is this just related to the new clubs(Cobra FP)?

    Re: Ball Shaping

reefboy i don't think your swing speed has anything to do with the shaping of your shot. the ball will only draw when you've hit in-to-out.

i was in a similar situation as you... can't judge on my swing speed(don't know it), but almost overnight my 9i went from going 130m to 140m and my 8i from 140m to 150m.

I did get a draw in my shots at first, but personally this only happens with me when i'm hitting the ball extremely well. Since that day i'm still getting the distances from the irons but i've elimindated the draw only when i want it.

alternatively you do have new clubs. until you get use to them you will probably draw the ball. definately not a bad thing if you do it every shot.. you know whats going to happen.

      Re: Ball Shaping

Drawing and hooking the ball is related to the axis the ball spins on, the same for a fade or slice. For a ball to fly straight the axis of rotation the ball spins on lies horizontal through the ball (-), for a draw or hook the axis has to slope up on the right(/) (this is for a right hander) and for a fade or slice the axis has to slope up to the left (\), the difference for a hook or slice is that the axis slope is greater than a fade or draw.

Where (-) (\) (/) is the slope of the axis a bit exaggerated with the last two but its all I have to work with on the keyboard

To create these shots the impact between the clubface and ball has to be square at impact for a straight shot, rotating closed through impact for the draw or hook and open for the fade or slice.

Swing path will also affect the shape and severity of these shots as will clubhead speed, the velocity from faster speed will overpower the side spinning effect until the ball slows in its forward movement creating an initial straight flight that bends later in it's trajectory.

I hope this is helpful ?
