  • Flat Backswing

Hi everyone, I currently play to a 6 handicap and have always had a flat swing plane. Anyone have any advice on how to get a more on-plane backswing?

I assume you're joking. That swing is right on plane, and I'd bet anything you already know it.

No I had no idea I always thought my takeaway was flat and I compensated later in the swing?

There will people who will argue this point, but your swing is a one-planer, one that is being taught more and more, is much simpler to understand, and easier to execute. The club is not "lifted" and then re-routed or flattened, a superfluous and error-inducing move.

Ok thanks alot. Could you offer any insight into what may have caused my erratic ball flight lately? I have been hitting everything from hooks to shanks.

I have looked closely at your video and think your problems are caused by your arms lifting away from you in the downswing and moving off plane.

With a one plane swing you must ensure your left arm stays up against your chest in the backswing and your right arm hugs your chest in the downswing.

This video drill should help you:
