  • shanking my short Irons

Good evening, I went out yesterday and it was a little cold. I was hitting the ball good, but when I got close to the green, I kept shanking my lobe and gap wedge to the right continuously. My partner told me that my hands were ahead of my club and to slow down, but it did not fix the problem. Could it be the grips??

Help me.. Help me.. Scared in Myrtle Beach.

    Thanks

    Dave

Had the same plague - hitting full shots great, every short pitch or chip was a short right squirter.

Turns out I had 'packed' my arms in too tight to my body, and they were moving away during the short swing. Try feeling like you're reaching just a bit and see if that helps. In the interim, you could always line the ball up off the toe (just like I had to resort to).

      Hi,

Here's a video, which shows possible causes and the fixes.

I have not had much problems with shanking. The ones I had, I'd say it was the swing too far from the inside to out, with the hands holding on and the clubface open, which is shown in the video. I think it happens when you have the short club in your hands and you do not make an aggresive and full release, because you try to guide the shot.

Shanking is always caused by swinging the club outside the ball. It is impossible here to understand which action is causing it for you as there are so many.

Here are some to look at:

Weight on front of feet at impact.

        Swinging out to in.

Arms swinging too far away from body.

Getting body ahead of arms so that the hozel lags into the ball.

Hands too far in front (Blocking) at impact.

Swinging the shaft at the ball.

Taking the club back too inside on the backswing then swinging excessively in to out.

Thank you very much for the information. I changed my swing recently which put me closer to the ball. Moved back and put the ball off my left foot. I know worked because after changing my stance, I went back to the recent change and automatically shanked the ball. The advice was fantastic.

Time for some 'unconventional' teaching. The shank is caused by lagging the hosel instead of the sweetspot. Try hitting some shots with your right thumb off the shaft.

For me, when I shank - it's because I had my weight going more towards my toes.

So, start off weight on your heels - I started getting back in the groove just like that.
