  • Please explain this result if you can...

So recently I've had my swing anylized. After seeing my swing I had a brief stay at a mental hospital, but upon being released, I got back to work on my swing...

So now my swing is flatter...which is good. More compact, which is good as well and I'm hitting very solid shots. But here's what has developed.

I hit a shot a solid shot with say a 4 iron. I flies very straight but as soon as it lands, it leaps to the right. I mean really leaps! Like it hit a ball out there or something. This is what I thought at first. But it's happened several times. So if I am putting that much sidespin on it, wouldn't it slice or at least fade a bit?

This would be a good swing if all pins were tucked to the right, but otherwise it's pretty strange.

    Any help is much appreciated!!!

    Hi Paul,

Curious, huh. I had a few chuckles picturing the wild leap of the ball to the right and your predicament.

You are right about questioning why it does not change the direction in flight, if the ball has a side spin. So you are not seeing any fall to the right in the flight, even at the end? That would be a great shot to have in the bag, a solid mainly straight shot which fades very slightly at the end, and softly falls to the green.

Also, is the ball stopping or is it hitting and jumping forward, as well as jumping right?

I wonder if you tried some intentional draws to the green, you can make the ball jump left. This may tell you that the ball does not lie, there has to be some clockwise side spin on the ball.

      Hi Ted,

No, it doesn't appear to softly fade. Just basically straight and when it hits it jumps dead right. Like 8 yards or so to the right.

When I hit a draw, it will roll left on the ground, but it starts drawing prior to landing, so I'm not sure what's going on.

Maybe I just need a few more weeks in the mental institution.
I wonder if they have the golf channel??

You need "The Twilight Zone" re-runs.

How far do you hit your 4 iron? The sidespin on a ball can be overpowered by it's initial velocity, this happens with a late draw or fade where the ball travels most of it's flight straight and turns in towards the end of its flight. If this is the case in your shot the ball may be landing just at the point it starts to fade.

            hi
look at your shots again you may find that when the ball starts rising it flys straight but when it reaches the top of its flight it falls more to the right.
often you think the ball is still flying straight until you compare it to where it was at the top of the flight.
i play a fade and often my playing partners say i hit the ball straight but if the flight is watched its straight till the top of the flight and then drops to the right and then the ball kicks a few feet more right.
try and see where you ball starts. line the flight against a tree in the distance and then watch to see if it falls to the right.
            all the best

              Brian and Bill,

I think you have it right. The ball does not lie, with respect to the spin action.

Thanks for the advise guys. I'll look at it closer tonight when I'm at the range and see if perhaps it's moving slightly right before hitting the ground.

look at your divots... they tell a story and can help us with the evaluation of your shots.

which way do they point relative to target... straight, left or right.???

This has just started happening and the ranges around here are matts so I don't know what the divot looks like. I am hoping to work it out before I play this weekend.

I bet on the course with real balls and real grass, you will see normal results. Who knows what range balls have in them and how long they have been used. I never look at the results of a ball after it lands on the range...too many variables.

i don't like hitting off synthetic grass... the feel of a bad shot will still produce a 1/2 good shot compared to hitting off grass.... to practice you need to hit off grass. afterall you don't play your round of golf off synthetic :P

not to mention it scra.pess the hell out of the bottom of the club.
