Re: Are there any excercises for arms getting ahead of body?

    LOL!

    Sorry. A little cryptic.

Just be sure that you don't completely substitute what you're told for your own feelings, gut or otherwise.

I'm not suggesting you are/do, I don't know. But KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) applies.

Two ways of looking at it. You do what you've been told, and it doesn't work, but carry on anyway as what you've been told "must be right" because of the source. Or you think you're doing it as you've been told, and it doesn't work, but in actual fact you're not doing it as prescribed.

There's always the possibility that it works and you're doing it exactly as prescribed, but the only person that can tell you that is the source of the prescription! That's where communication comes in, and trust in your teacher.

Thanks for that, now clear. I understand what you mean. I can hit some terrific shots, so good I feel that I do not want to change. But, something is obviously wrong as I then start doing this stupid thing. So, I will bear what you say in my mind.

Took it all down to the range today. Half swing now keeping well connected and hitting straight. Can't say the same about the full swings. Don't see my professional again until Wednesday though. So, hoping I might get it a bit better by then.

            Hi miffin,

Here's another one, which I use quite frequently, and it resolves a lot of issues regarding sequencing (premature ********** ) and staying behind the ball.

Take the club with a normal left hand grip. With the right hand take the forefinger and middle finger and hook the first and second joints of them about halfway down the shaft (for clarification, the palm of the hand is per the normal grip, facing upwards and NOT over the shaft and pointing down).

Take a regular backswing with straight left arm, the right wrist cocking and the right elbow folding. Hold this position at the top of BS, while you do the lower body stuff (lateral bump, sit down action of the legs, and rotation of hips), feeling the feet gripping the floor and the anchoring the shift and rotation. Do this in slow motion, with isometric resistance against the forward motion and rotation and the arms being held back, the hooked fingers also holding the shaft back, and it's a great sensation.

At a point where you feel the separation of the lower body has created a stored up torquey feeling on the held back upper body, shoulders and arms, let the arms drop into the downswing (keep in mind the previous advice about keeping the upper body and arms connected, so keep the arms in front of the upper body). The cock of the right wrist is still retained, the right elbow falls towards the hip, and you will feel the hooked fingertips exerting a "holding back" pulling action on the shaft and the club.

You can take this swing back and through, stopping and restarting portions to emphasize particular actions and feelings.

This is one of my favourite all round drills. Let me know what you think about it for your premature problem.

            Ted

Re: Are there any excercises for arms getting ahead of body?

I have lost confidence somewhat now. Saw my Professional again yesterday. Before, he was saying that my arms were getting ahead of my body thus I was hitting left. Yesterday, the goal posts were moved somewhat. It is now diagnosed as my closing the face on backswing and to a lesser extent flipping my wrists too much through the impact area. If I wasn't confused before, I sure am now. Once again, if anyone has any suggestions I really would appreciate it. Unfortunately I have not got a camera or anything to post a video.

                Hmmmm.

All of what your coach has said can result in seeing a lot of the left side of the golf course. It's just whether he's clutching at what he thinks might be wrong, or whether he knows what's wrong.

Do you know what (if any) professionals he uses as models?

A closed clubface AND fast arms AND flipping, to me, would mean that you can't get the ball off the ground and you hit most of your shots at least 45 degrees left.

All very messy by my estimates.

Any chance of getting a new coach?!

I understand why you're confused. So am I!

Thanks for the support. I am looking for a new coach and I would prefer one with a camera. He didn't mention any professionals to model on. I looked at it myself. What I found was, that if I slow my swing right down I eliminate most of the problems. Could that be all the problem is do you think?

And so it begins! The guessing game fuelled by the well-meaning but ill-equipped pro!

I'm not about to start guessing without seeing your swing. That would make me worse than your pro!

Anybody's swing or system you like the look of? Be it current pro or top 100 teacher of summink?

Well, I really like the look of Montie. It looks so easy and nearly graceful!!

In that case have a study of 2 plane swing stuff. Everything about it. Grip, stance, release etc.

Watch vids of Monty, Els, Singh, Wie, Toms

Leadbetter or Harmon is probably worth looking at too.

I'm not saying to copy everything about them, but you seem to require direction. You need a benchmark to work towards otherwise you could flail away trying to combine certain things with other wrong things and it's a world of hurt!

Alternatively, before BrianW chimes in, I've heard 3 Skills is worth a look!

Thanks a lot. I will do that. I have never quite understood the 1 and 2 plane thing. I did try the 3 skills with some good success at first but then I completely lost my way.

In that case I'd clear your mind, start from scratch, and go through 3 skills from the top.

If it gives you confidence, use it.

Work on a slower swing with great ball contact for now, you can gradually add speed.

Thanks. That's the way to go I think. I quite surprise myself if I slow it all down.
