Re: Position of left foot
A turned out left foot assists in rotation during the downswing follow through. Raising the left heel in the bckswing helps to make a full shoulder turn, especially if you do not have good flexibility. I think if it helps then there is no problem, you mist plant it back down at the beginning of the downswing though. Golfers like jack Nicklaus and Bobby Jones raised their left heels.

Re: Position of left foot
Hi gsp,
Further to what Brian said, and your specific question about weight shift, the raising of the left heel is not a definitive indication that the weight has been shifted. You can have a big reverse pivot and still raise the heel. In this case, the weight will be on the ball or toes of the foot, and there would be next to no weight on the right leg.
I used to have exactly that type of reverse pivot, and when I finally recognized it, it answered why my left foot and calf muscles would ache after the round. Just test for this, by bouncing your weight up and down on the balls or toes of the left foot and feeling that most of the weight has been moved off to the right side..
