How does flaring out your left foot (right handers) help in the swing. I think it is suppose to restrict your hip turn, but I dont know if there are any other advantages or not.

A new highlight: Golfing the home course on Christmas Day.
I say it too often: If it's golf club shaped, you can play with it.
For the record, I'm a club doctor, not a swing doctor.
Re: Left toe flare
Not only does it restrict the hip turn going back, but it also makes it easier to fire through.

Re: Left toe flare
So is this possibly not a bad practice. I noticed from the evolved tiger swing on golf.com he has flared his slightly?

Re: Left toe flare
hi
having a flared left foot also helps with the balance of your swing. Like lowpost said it restricts the back swing. as the weight moves over to the outside of the left foot on the down swing having it flared out helps the turn and keeps you balanced in the through swing.
try swinging with your foot square with a tee peg at your heal and your toe and then move your left foot to the right in 1/2 inch movements, adding a tee each time but keeping the heal tee peg the same. you will see that the balance of the swing will change.
cheers
Bill

Re: Left toe flare
Some good answers above.
Ben Hogan flared his left foot so I guess it should be OK for us
Here is the picture from his book '5 Lessons' that shows his feet position for each club.
