  • Please help! Piercing Ball Flight instead of ballooning

For quite some time, I have been struggling with hitting my irons with a piercing ball flight. A couple pros on the golf course told me that I hit the ball high but it does not have the penetrating ball flight. I hit the ball on the sweat spot majority of the time as shown by my ball marks on the clubface and according to the pro on the course. However, he pointed out that when I on my downswing my hands are more upright, which causes a slight fade on my ball flight. Please help me with some tips as how I can develop a more penetrating ball flight. I hit my 3 iron really high. I was playing with a 5 handicapper the other day, and his ball flight with his 6 iron was lower than my 3 iron. I hit my 3 iron about 190-195. The wind really kills my iron game as the ball spins even more and loses more distance. I would really appreciate some help.

if ya getting 195 on your 3i, then i doubt you have a problem hitting the ball.

but sounds to me your hitting the ball with your weight on your back foot.

Sorry I should clarify a bit more. I get 195 yards after the roll..the carry is probably 180 (if that).

You may be coming into impact with an open clubface, this adds loft which will give a higher flight and will create fades and slices. You may not be releasing the clubface properly so it is not rotating closed through impact.

Take a look at this video it may help you:

Wow, 10 to 15 yards of roll wilh a 3 iron and high ball flight. I hit my 3 iron 190-195 with high ball flight and might get 5 yards of roll. Even shorter roll on the green.

HI jim If you hit the ball high you have the ball ahead in your ball position
relative to your swing arc ,,,,notice I said swing arc not between your feet . For a lower ball flight you have to strike the ball before the bottom of your arc and then most important is to take a divot ,I can almost bet you rarely take a divot . When you move the ball back . you must close the clubface abit so its keep looking down the target line and this makes for a stronger loft on the club eg 6 iron into a 5 or 4 iron . Also moving the ball back makes you hit the ball form the inside more ,,,,a signature of strong ball strikers Try this out 50% and work your way to 100% swing speed and see if it helps your flight to become stronger

I've been playing a new set of irons for the past 15 days and just now getting a feel for what these Ping i5s can do. I normally position the ball in the center of my stance. By moving the ball forward a inch and not opening the club face gives me a very nice high draw. A inch back of center I get a slight fade. Closing the club face at a inch back from center gives me lower ball flight and about 10 yards more distance. Love the i5s!!

                Hi Jim,

I was interested to read your positional methods for shaping shots. I'm used to the traditional teachings in this, so I did a google search, page follows.

ball position for draw - Google Search

You see, I'm of the traditional (Zinger included) school. However, whatever works, works.

However, I see another interesting article, which may explain how it's different for different swingers. See about the sixth hit on the list World of Golf I think. Food for thought.

I thought you might be interested. I was.

Thanks Ted, I'll have to look at some the google search results. After reading your post I went out in the back yard where I can hit a full 8 iron. I hit 3 balls about a inch back from center with somewhat square or little open club face and was able to get just a little right to left ball movement. I also hit 3 8 iron shots with the ball forward about a inch from center and was able to get about 5 yard right to left ball movement.
Here's my wife's and mine score card from yesterday. I missed a 3 foot putt on the first and third hole other then that I'm playing about as good of golf as I've ever played. Didn't miss a iron shot.

                    Hi Jim,

As I said, I've always somewhat of a traditionalist in fundamentals, but there are ways and means. I like to learn different things, so keep my eyes open.

Nice looking scorecard. What happened on the first hole? .It looks straightforward. No first tee shot mulligan? or was it the first hole short game blues?

1st hole on Whitebirch is tough hole with a elevated green with a large bunker guarding the front of it. I missed the green with my second shot which was a good shot but I just mis-judged the wind. Should have been a bogey hole but a poor putt made it a double. Third hole was a simple missed 3 foot putt to the left. Very windy conditions didn't help but I'm not complaining.
