  • Help - Slice

Been playing golf for 4-5years and recently had a 3 month break. Though i've come back shooting mid 80 rounds. this slice that has crept into my game is killing me...

I'm going to get a lesson hopefully today to get my draw back.

basically whats happening is my stance just doesn't feel right.
my swing i feel as if it's too quick from the top and i'm pulling across the ball.. if i don't pull slice i just slice.

i even changed to my old driver which i could do any shot with and even that doesn't help.

    any suggestions.

    Hi AGB,

You have a swing plane problem, i.e. over the top. outside to in plane, which is cutting across the ball.

Big bill had the same problem and he is able to hit draws now. See the currently running thread "best tip/drill", or something like that for the tee in the butt end of grip drill. Workon that to visualize/feel the action.

    Good luck,

    Ted

I find I need to get the wrist cock with flat wrist at top and the follow thru strong with club head to hit a little draw rather than slice or pull

        Re: Help - Slice

ok. i think everything is sorted again... i went out to the course today where i played between 3 - 5 balls on each hole.... gotta love quiet golf courses ...

anyway... i'm just about back where i was 3 months ago. this is what i fixed...

my stance was very open... feet \ to target |... i set up what i thought was a straight stance and put my club on the ground toe - toe.. it wasn't preety. no wonder the club face wasn't closing for me...

this saw immediate results and i started nailing my drives 240m straight and on the uphill fairways. and hitting my 3i around the 195m. (using google earth ruler for measurements.)

i didn't really change my swing.. it's always been solid, but the fact i had an open stance restricted my shoulder movement which gave me the out-to-in swing.. i even got my draw back on my irons which i was estatic about..

it's always a great learning point in ones game where you can work these things out for yourself and get immediate results. my full confidence isn't back and i have to mentally rework the swing back into my head... but from what i achieved today i hope to start shooting into the 70s...

i mean if i can shoot mid 80s and not hit a fairway i gotta start getting some good scores you would think.. right...

will keep ya informed.. got a stroke event on saturday.

          Re: Help - Slice

          Afternoon AGB,

I played golf for 3 years between the ages of 14-17 and got down to a handicap of 8. I unfortunately gave up and have regretted it ever since.

I started to play again seriously for the last 3 months and have always had the problem of swinging "over the top" (Cutting across) which always resulted is a slice.

Over the past few weeks I wanted to hit it as long and straight as I used to so have been hitting the range every night to sort it out.

You seem to be a good standard golfer hitting in the mid 80's so I know this tip will definitely sort your slice to a draw.

At the top of your swing drop your hands/arms towards your right foot. This makes it near enough impossible to swing "over the top" trust me I was mentally practising it all day and played 9 holes last night hitting a 37 when the par is 36.

I was hitting the ball dead straight with every club and hit 8 out of 9 greens in regulation having 8 birdie putt's (Shame i had a shocker @ putting lol).

Try it and see if it works, its such a simple technique which takes some getting used to but will make you hit that draw again trust me.

Let me know if you try it and how you get on.

            Re: Help - Slice

yeah, Hugh, thats how my swing feels when i have it going well. It's amazing how a lay off even 3 months hurts your game., my driving is getting back to normal, my chipping is still and has always been strong same with my putting, but now my short game is coming up short. only a few months back i was hitting an 8i near 150m. thats dropped right back down to 140m and my LW is a joke at the moment...

            i know though it's a confidence thing....
Got the game tomorrow so i'll see how i go.

              Re: Help - Slice

had a good game today. shot 84 off the stick. had a few mental errors putting and a bad start to the back 9, but shot 42,42 playing off 14hc.

Everything is coming back into my game, especially my confidence.

i'm glad i worked out my problems, it's taught me more about the game even after 4 years playing.

I now have a good setup routine

                god, i hate this game..........

only yesterday i went out and played really well... you would think i could do it 2 days in a row, but i've gotten worse... put aside the 30kt winds blowing today i hit 2 straight drives all day, putting was great, but the rest of my game was $#@&........................................

i know what i'm doing wrong, but i can't get my head around it to fix it.....

as far as i know my setup is fine, but when i swing i am turning my shoulders around and swinging out-to-in, my divot points 30degrees left of target... i know i'm doing it, i can feel myself doing it, but i can't stop myself from doing it.

anyone have any tips or drills to get me swings going straight.

Are you starting the downswing with an assertive pelvic shift-rotation movement, rather than an upper body/arm movement?

i have the same problem with a big slice
and i found out today that if i drive with the 3 wood its not as bad

i dont know why but i can almost hit it just as far but its closer to the fairway

                        give it a try

different story for me. i'm doing it with all my clubs. not just the driver... it's just that the driver shows off my bad swing worse than the other clubs.

                            AGB,

Back again after a few weeks lol. I have been playing absolutely shocking. I got my new official handicap of 3 at my golf club and was thinking of doing the PGA teaching degree to turn pro I was playing that well, then had about 2 weeks off and completely lost my swing. I am swinging over the top so badly its untrue resulting in snap hooks, pulls and slices.

I am hitting the range tomorrow morning to work the kinks out. I have come to the conslusion that I am not moving my hips towards the target on my downswing and not pulling the club towards the ground, I think once i get this cracked I may be on to playing good golf again.

I will update you. Hope Your playing well again now.

                              Re: Help - Slice

I posted this recently regarding OTT.

I don't have the problem, but saw this the other day. It seems to make sense, when I think about it and visualize the action.

The concept that was explained and shown is that you cannot swing OTT, if you first make the shift to the front leg, before swinging your shoulders and body. The shift is accompanied with the "dropping" of the arms on plane in the early "slot", and only then you would turn on the jets with the turning action of the body and shoulders.

It's the swinging from the ground up idea, and also the idea that the swing does not start at 100 miles an hour. Let the body get into a solid position (the bowed kneed sitdown position ala Snead, before letting the upper body and arms go. Also the arms drop, but the clubhead is still lagging behind at a speed of what? 5 miles an hour, and then building up from there to maximum through and just past impact. You don't try to use your big muscles at the start to try to attain clubhead speed of 100 miles an hour at the top.
