  • Drop the hands.....swing more powerful

Can someone explain why this would occur.....

On my driver I have noticed if I drop my hands drastically at the address I get a more powerful flight with less chance of a fade....

Only thing I can think of is it forces the club to be less upright at take away...

    I dunno...but i like it...

Re: Drop the hands.....swing more powerful

Dropping the arms from the top of the backswing brings the club down to the inside of the ball, as you now turn through the clubface approaches the ball on and inside path which is exactly what you require to make a good golf shot. If the club is thrown from the top it produces an inside-out swing that will produce slices or hooks depending on how you use your wrists.

Dropping the arms with the shoulders rotated is the way to start the downswing with a 'two plane swing'. A 'one plane rotary swing' does not need this to happen as the club rotates more around the body in the takeaway and downswing.

By dropping your hands I imagine you are creating a flatter swing plane which is promoting a more in to in sweeping motion through the ball. This is perfect for driving but not good for your irons. Instead of dropping your hands try teeing the ball up higher and addressing the ball with the driver bang on the sweet spot. This should give you the same flatter swing arc without the need to drop your hands which will probably mess up your irons.

I agree that this is the correct answer - "Anyone TGM can correct me, but I think that is the number 3 accumulator.."

PA#3 is the transfer power accumulator and it supplies power by allowing the golfer to roll the left hand into impact. The left hand rolls during the release swivel action to a vertical flat left wrist/hand alignment at impact. The amount of roll is increased if a golfer holds the grip in the low palm/fingers, and increases the accumulator #3 angle at address.

        See - http://perfectgolfswingreview.net/LDaddressposition.jpg

The red angle represents the accumulator #3 angle and this angle is enhanced if the arms hang straight down from the shoulder sockets (instead of the left arm being held in a straight-line relationship with the clubshaft with the hands higher at address).

Also, a swinger often uses horizontal hinging to produce a draw pattern and horizontal hinging (roll action post-impact) blends very well with a pronounced release swivel action that has a significant amount of accumulator #3 release.

See this swing video lesson to understand how the power accumulator's work.
