  • 3 wood goes farther than driver???

    Hello,

I currently am hitting my 3 wood Callaway Squareway wood farther than my driver, about 240 yards. When hitting my Callawy Fti my ball just balloons to the ground landing about 235. In fact, sometimes the ball bounces once then stops. I have taken lessons and been around scratch golfers and they are stunned and have no idea why this is happening. Any suggestions?

If your making better contact with your 3w than with your driver its often a sign that the driver shaft is too long to allow you consistent sweet spot impact.

Standard FTI is what, 45.75". Probably a marketing decision rather than a golfing one. I'd consider having at least an inch off that or maybe have the beast fitted to you.

You need to get on a launch monitor to see what is really happening.

It could be related to spin, flex, kick-point, ball position ... the list is endless.

Sounds like it could be too much spin - especially if it's ballooning. Less loft or a shaft with a much stiffer tip is the route to follow to lower spin.

Thank you for responding, the more the better!! I used to hit a Cleveland Launcher 460CC and it did the same thing. The kick point was low with a stiff shaft. My Fti's shaft is a Pro Launch Red with a mid kick point and has a 9 degree loft. I was on a launch monitor last year when I was fitted for my clubs and my swing speed is 109-113. Hopefully this helps!

Sounds like your 3W is just more suited for your swing mechanics. I know a couple of guys who can swing their 3Ws faster through the impact zone, than their 460 cc drivers. But give them a smaller driver head the size of their 3W, with the same (longer) shaft, in a 10* loft, and their driver goes farther than their 14* 3W. I know in my own swing, I can hit the ball farther using one of those low profile, 460 cc, square drivers than I can using a regular size 460 cc driver. For some reason I just get the feeling that my arms, and hands work together (lag) better with the lower profile driver. Of course, 240 with a 3W is not a bad thing either. I wish I still had a 110 mph swing speed. The only way I can reach that speed now is riding with my grandson in his sports car. GJS
