  • One Plane Swing

    Hi All,
New to this forum. I've been a golfer for about 16 yrs and played with my swing countless times. Was pretty consistent with low 80's and at one time several yrs back, down to a 7 handicapp. However, the past year, its been terrible!! Lack distance and direction. I just started with the One Plane Swing this week and so far its been pretty consistent. I'm on plane better and less mechanics to think about.(one of my problems is thinking way to much!) My lower irons, getting good divots and striking the ball better. Higher irons seem to give me a problem, 4, and 3. My 3 wood and hybrid are working well. But my Driver is giving me problems. Its straight but lacks distance...quite a bit...like 50 yrds. With the one plane swing, I'm having trouble with the follow thru. I'm bringing the club down the line and ball is going straight but I'm finding that my arms end up extended in front of me...if that makes sense! Any thoughts about the one plane swing and help with my release on this technique?

Bar none - the best one plane teacher on the planet is Chuck Quinton over at oneplanegolfswing.com

If you're not paying the $15/mth to get in the vault, you're missing out on a ton.

**Disclaimer** I'm a student of Chuck. I use his method. I suffered some distance loss when I started out due to being to mechanical, not athletic enough.

Chances are with your driver you're not swinging as fast as you used to (yet), and your launch characteristics may have changed.

Thanks...I ran into his name on the web. I'm in TX and was hoping to find someone in TX who teaches the One Plane. Not sure what you mean about the $15 per/mth but will look at his website. I also found jeff Ritter in Az and the way he teaches on video looks real simple. I think your right about the distance factor. I've only been working on the swing just this week and see excellent results. Played today and hit my 4 iron close to 200yds with great ball flight/contact. But something is wrong as I only hit my driver maybe another 20 yds more!!!! Totally disgusted! I'm not a big guy who hits it a ton....but I cant play hitting my driver that short of a distance!! SO SHORT I CAN HEAR THE BALL DROP!!!! Thanks for the reply!!

Ritter doesn't teach what Quinton does - there's actually a video out there somewhere comparing the two.

You can be a 'Vault Member' for $15/month - there's 100+ videos in there to watch covering various topics.

Talk to me about your driver - I pull 4i from ~200, but hit my driver 240-250 in the air. Sounds like you could use some equipment optimization.

LowPost42, Driver is a 10.5 Cobra, reg shaft, about 3-4 yrs old. Not sure if its the driver...I only wish! Last mth I was getting the distance about the same as you(the same distance(240-250) was achieved over a yr and half ago and then something happen). had it for a couple of weeks last mth and thought I was back in business then poof...back to hitting wedges off the teebox!!. I'm 56 yrs old but that shouldnt be the problem. Two yrs ago I was playing at 7000 yrds. Granted, I was hitting long/mid irons into the green. Today playing at 6600 and urghhh, hitting mid irons into the green!!

Is there a launch monitor close by? My guess is that you're over-spinning your driver causing a short, very high flight. What's your ball flight like?

                Re: One Plane Swing

The golfball has backspin. Too little, and it falls out of the air (as there's not enough spin to maintain lift). Too much, and it shoots up high and goes nowhere (too much spin creates drag).

With your improved mechanics, you're likely compressing the ball better - which generates more spin. Belting it out there 270 with a stock shaft in R meant you likely weren't compressing the ball. Now that you are, you need either less loft or a much stiffer shaft (in the tip section) to reduce your spin numbers. The caveat is that you need a launch monitor to figure out how much spin you need to take off (although, by the sounds of it, 1000 RPM or more could be necessary). At your swing speed, if you're approaching (or over) 3800 RPM, you're likely generating too much spin with your driver.

The quick fix is to grab a 9 degree driver in a stock S flex and see if it works out. If you gain distance, try an 8. The best bet is to find a fitter, get your numbers, and get set up!

Thanks and good advise. I'll visit Golfsmith which I know has a launch monitor.
