  • Wrist Cock in the Golf Swing

I'm a 6 handicapp, good striker of the ball but do a alot of experimentation in search of greater consistency.

I have always been curious about the use of the wrists throughout the golf swing. There seems to be many different trains of thought.

    Conventional 'text book' advice is...
    1. Make a smooth one piece take away where wrist are passive
    2. Half way into your back swing your wrists should be fullly hinged at a 90 degree angle
    3. Turn your back to the target to reach a perfect top of backswing
    4. Unwind from the lower body, retaining the wrist angle for as long as possible to create lag and power.

However I have found that when I make a conscious effort to cock my wrists early, as in almost immediatly into my takeaway - I generate more power and a very crisp strike with my irons.

I wonder has anyone else had a similar realisation and if there someone who can shed light on this, i would appreciate hearing from you.

As long as a golfer obtains a 90 degree left wrist cock angle by the end of the backswing, it doesn't matter when the left wrist cocks up during the backswing. Joe Dante recommends an early wrist cock. Golfers who use an one piece takeaway often have a late wrist cock and golfers who use a right forearm takeaway have a random left wrist cock action (random being intermediate between an early and a late left wrist cock).

Please go to this link to see my opinion on why the early break "works" for some people.

There is a long thread on this site "Are the 4 Magic moves magic" it has debated the early wrist break as promoted in Joe Dante's 4 Magic Moves.

I like this action as it sets the wrists in a powerful position from the start, takes the club away nicely on plane and has the left wrist bowed and the right cupped. Al that is needed from here is a shoulder turn and you are in the perfect position at the top.

The thread is long but you will probably find it a good read.
