  • Looking for some feedback, with swing video

    Hi all,

I am 22 years old, trying to fix a few flaws in my swing to make the game more enjoyable on the real course! In my long game, I tend to struggle mostly with:

    • slicing or pull-slicing longer clubs, particularly nasty with driver
    • pushing any club
    • popping up the driver slightly (maybe hitting down on it too much)
    • occasionally hitting irons fat

I am hoping to groove a nice in-to-out draw swing path but I need some help figuring out what is going wrong. I made a compilation of my current swing with a few clubs today, hosted on youtube:

From watching the videos I realized that I dip down slightly past parallel on the backswing which I did not know I was doing. Maybe this explains some of the longer club issues?

    Thanks for any feedback,
    Pat

it's really hard to comment on your swing as you aren't actually hitting a ball and we all know practise swings are perfect swings.

if you can, go down to a golf driving range with your camera and re-do the footage.

    but your swing looks fine.

Your pull-slices are because you flip the hands shut way too early. Relax the right wrist and let it hang way back all the way into impact. Let the rotation of the shoulders square the face. This will get you inside-out and hit your draw with a low penetrating flight...basically fixing all your issues.

Greg's clips from your video show clearly that your problem is a breakdown of the wrists.

The attached article (Used by Rotator in a previous thread) shows what you should be doing and what you are doing wrong now (The AJ golf swing)

Thanks for all of the feedback, I will work on improving my impact position. I read the whole article you posted and it all makes a lot of sense and clearly describes most of the problems I typically encounter. However I am having trouble mentally getting the changes down, do you know of any good drills to fix this problem I am having? Also, how does my swing plane look? I have tried to correct my over the top swingplane but I am not sure if I have been successful enough yet.

                edit..

Well I spent the day working on impact drills I found on youtube and I felt like I was starting to get a hang of the hands forward feel. However I think I was having trouble closing the clubface enough and it was resulting in pushes and unwanted fades/slices, plus my ball flight still seemed pretty high compared to what I expected. Any tips on helping to close the clubface in time without going back to the flipping flaw?

A push is from a (square face to in to out path) or open face reletive to in to in path and a slice is from a open face with a out to in path or very open with a in to in path.

It is hard to say without seeing ball fight and/or some better video, but I would work on closing the face and or strenghtening your grip.

I am assuming that you hit a push, and then you didn't want it to go right so you changed your swing path a bit and that is where the slice came from. I would attempt to keep your in to out swing, and work on closing the face, that will get you a draw.
I guess I didn't type exactly what I meant. I was struggling with push-slices where my ball started right then faded/sliced. This would indicate an in-to-out path with too open of a clubface right? If so then yes I need some help getting that clubfaced closed without flipping like I used to.

Did you study the article in the link I posted. This shows you how to supinate the left wrist through impact and close the face while creating a flat or bowed left wrist and a cupped right wrist.

I agree with skywalker. The first thing that struck me, when I viewed the video was an apparent reverse pivot.

Your head seems to be well ahead of your swing bottom position (particularly with the iron at the top of backswing). Compare this with the pics of the players shown in the around hawaii link, whose heads are behind the bottom of swing position. Take a straight edge (a piece of paper will do) and line it up with your head on the frontal view and you will see this. You can also freeze and slow motion your swing by clicking your cursor intermittently on the "play/pause" button of the video. You can place the cursor on either side of the timer button to fine tune your analysis of the positions of your swing.

You have nice tempo and a good swing action. Your spine angle and head level is good also.

                      Ted

Here's a drill... but you've got some work ahead of you...

                        keep it simple...

Re: Looking for some feedback, with swing video

I spent about a day working on impact drills and turning my shoulders/arms to close the clubface/bow the left wrist. Today I went to the driving range again and hit tremendously better. My impact felt so much more solid and the ball really zipped off of my woods. I still need to do some work refining my supination and weight shift but overall my swing feels much better. I will try to post new videos when I go to the range again. Thanks so much for the feedback, it really helped me a ton.

Once you can do the impact drill...
Start making swings to the 9:00 position...
Not allowing your hands to go any higher as
in the video...Finishing at the 3.00 position...

This is where things start getting difficult...
Gradually allow your hands to go higher...
Stopping at a 3/4 swing the extra 1/4 is where alot
                            of the problems arise...

Here's a link to some videos on weight shift...

Hi Pat, looks like you have a slight problem with posture, your right leg should not be straight in the completion of your back swing, when you address the ball stand with the club straight out in front of you, bend your hips until the club is behind the ball, bend your knees so that they are over your shoe lases. keep your back straight and head as level as possible, take the club back slowly as you possibly can , now make sure that the right leg is still bent at the knee on the completion of the back swing . and always remember to take (swing) the club around your body with a full shoulder turn,
