  • How Often

    How often have we been:

    Under a tree.

    Against a tree.

    Behind a tree.

    In the trees

    In the deep rough.

    In the second cut.

    In the first cut.

    In a green-side bunker.

    In a fairway bunker.

    In a bunker up-slope.

    In a bunker down-slope.

    On the green cut line.

    On the green apron.

    On a fairway cut line

With the ball above our feet.

With the ball bellow our feet.

    With an uphill lie.

    With a downhill lie.

On the green 50 Ft, 30 Ft, 20 Ft, 10 Ft, 5 Ft, 2 Ft, 1 Ft to the pin.

HOW OFTEN DO WE PRACTICE THESE SHOTS

    Re: How Often

    Hi Brian,

I was beside three trees the last round. With two of them I was able to punch out sideways, using only my arms and hands to propel the club, after limboing my body under and between branches.

The third one was under the low branches of a spruce and also required me to flip a club over and play the ball off my opposite hand. I could not use a turned over wedge, so I used the back of a hybrid club.

I used to have bets with my cronies on par threes, closest to the hole, where I would flip my left handed iron over and play it right handed.

I would practice this shot occasionally at the range, so it does not feel odd to me when I have occasion to use it.

      Re: How Often

      How I practice these:

      Under a tree.
About 2-3 shots per practice session: 4i - choked-up, 1/2 swing, back in stance. 150 yds total, 100 in air.

      Against a tree.
About every 4th practice session: Pw - Left-handed swing with the club flipped over. I always take a Left-handed club to the range and practice this shot left handed swing, then take the right-handed Pw out and repeat.

      Behind a tree.
Suck it up - chip out

      In the trees
      Same as Under a tree

      In the deep rough.
Hard to practice this at the range...but on the course, aim right. The club will always close on you. Never more then a 7i.

      In the second cut.

      In the first cut.

      In a green-side bunker.

      In a fairway bunker.

      In a bunker up-slope.
Play less club but choke up a bit more. Shoulders level with slope.

      In a bunker down-slope.
Shoulders level with the hill, Hit ball first if you can, and expect a lot of run.

      On the green cut line.
      3w/5w putting stroke.

      On the green apron.

      On a fairway cut line

With the ball above our feet.
Aim right, more club, choke up.

With the ball bellow our feet.
Aim left, less club, flex knees more.

      With an uphill lie.
Aim slightly right, more club, shoulders level with hill.

      With a downhill lie.
Aim slightly left, less club, shoulders level with hill.

On the green 50 Ft, 30 Ft, 20 Ft, 10 Ft, 5 Ft, 2 Ft, 1 Ft to the pin.
Ladder drill: 2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16 feet. Make all starting at the 2. Might take you a half-hour.
Lag-Drill: Long putts at random lengths, 2nd putt is added a full club length. Make 8-10 2 putts.

      Great thread Brian!!!

        Re: How Often

        hi Brian
i have just got Dave Pelz newish, "Damage control!"
its like his "putting and short game bible" and goes into all the kinds of shots you have put on your list above.
i have found it a great read but have not went out and praticed 10% of the shots in that book yet.
not only does it cover how to hit all the shots you find in the long grass and hazards but shots behind trees etc but also goes into how to manage the hole and what to look for and how to avoid troble.
when i went to order the book they wanted $65 for postage on a $25 book so i e-mailed them and talked them down to posting it for $15.
so don't be put off by the high postage to send to the uk.
        cheers
        Bill

If tight up against the back of a tree I use the back of my blade putter with a left handed swing, works great.

I have become quite proficient at making good long shots from under trees with my driver, managed to knock one over 200 yards onto the green a few weeks ago.

            Re: How Often

            Hi Brian,

Unfortunately, my putter is a Ping CraZee, which would be like hitting the ball with the leading edge of a garden hoe if I flipped it over. Before the hybrids came along, I did flip a fairway wood to make that same shot.

For hitting a low shot under branches, I also have used driver to advance the ball.

              Re: How Often

I thought I posted on this topic, but I guess not. Anyway you might have forgotten a few. Hitting out of divots, and off of hard pan. Thin lies? I practice those all the time. One shot that still gives me fits after all these years is the hanging lie even though I practice it when ever I can. I am always hitting practice shots off of uneven lies. I don't spend much time practicing out of the rough to avoid a wrist, or hand injury. Trees I don't fool around with much. There is only so much you can do with trees depending on the situation. Bunkers are another area I spend practice time on. Putts I practice from up to 20' range. If I can find a practice green with breaks, I am there. I even practice reading the green nearer the pin for damage and subtle breaks in that area. My reason for spending more time on the harder shots, is that it makes the easy shots easier. GJS
