  • Overswing

I have just returned to golf after a long layoff and still have an overswing. I read somewhere that a plastic bottle with the ends cut off, placed on the left arm covering the elbow helps. (Only for practice of course, it would look stupid on the course and probably illegal). Does anyone have any other suggestions? It is not as bad as John Daly but it is causing me a lack of control.

    Thanks

    Re: Overswing

Most over swinging is caused where the left arm (Right hander) bends excessively in the backswing, this allows the club to drop over the trail shoulder and leaks power due to the loss of width and leverage. John Daily creates a large shoulder turn which is a different thing.

As you take the club back try and keep your hands away from your head. A small amount of bend in the left elbow is OK but don't let it get excessive. Another point is to take the club to the top by only rotating your shoulders and not lifting your arms.

    I hope this helps.

      Re: Overswing

I feel for you. It is the biggest swing fault I have and it drives my pro mad.
But the things that seam to be working for me are the following:

      1. Shorten the arm swing with someone with educated eyes telling you where it needs to stop. For me it feels like a 1/3 swing of my original. So that is where I aim to stop it.

      2. Once the arms have completed their movement then turn the torso a little so my back is facing the target.

Then let it rip back to the ball.

There was one piece that pulled all of this together for me was the realization that only my eyeballs needed to look at my ball not my face. My pro showed my that my face needs to turn to the right(I am a right handed golfer) a little as the torso and arms move, otherwise my arms lift higher and off plane to compensate. Trust me when I say my original shots were very ugly. The effect the face turn has had on my swing is to remove most of the tension from the neck and shoulders. It is becoming a very easy swing.

      I hope this helps.

        Re: Overswing

Thanks everyone. I went to a pro when I first had the problem. It was on the American course in Berlin. He actually made my over swing worse (he was a brit by the way, like me). So I packed it all in. I will try your suggestions, my son is a very good golfer so will get him to have a butchers at my swing.

        Thanks a lot
