  • incomplete follow through

    Hi everyone,

Just trawling for others thoughts on my incomplete through swing. Went out for a game of golf, wife scoring and admiring the sun. After 6 holes she suddenly says "why do you stop after you hit the ball?" Now I cannot think of anything other than my finish position and whether thats the cause of a power drain, I am rarely happy with the distance I hit driver - irons ok for some reason? Basically every full shot sees me finish partly turned towards the target and hands around left shoulder but still in front of me. Any ideas?

    Cheers,
    Andy

    Re: incomplete follow through

    Hi Andy,

It's fine to finish the swing, but you may not be accelerating through the impact zone, because of your swing. Your finish may be just an add-on flourish.

You have to have the club at it's greatest speed just past impact. This is the point where the acceleration and centrifugal force from the swing action has both arms extended and the clubshaft in line with the arms. The followthrough and finish should be a result of this speed.

Take your club and grip it near the head and take your swings, back and through as fast as you can generate the speed. You will hear the whoosh of the air resistance. You should strive to hear the whoosh at the bottom of the swing and as loud as possible, past impact. You will finish well and around, as a natural by-product of the speed through impact. Fiip the club over and duplicate that swoosh.

You're lucky. With my missus it's "why is your hairline going backwards?".

        Re: incomplete follow through

Most likely, your shoulders stop rotating on the downswing (more particularly, through impact). If this happens, your swing actually starts to decelerate.

To understand this, swing your arms without a club but deliberately stop the shoulder rotation close to impact. The momentum in your arms falls away noticeably. Then, do the same making sure the shoulders continue to rotate and see how the arms now accelerate smoothly through the hitting zone.

          Re: incomplete follow through

I see a lot of golfers finish this way with a short jabby follow through, the result is normally a pushed or sliced shot with limited power.

Rotators post gives some great advice, dont waste your power at the top of the downswing, instead slowly speed up from the top so that you are reaching maximum speed just after impact such that the momentum pulls you through to a full finish.
