  • How do you "take-away"?

    Hi Guys,

Just wondering how people start the take-away in their swing, just to try and get some consensus and / or ideas...

Personally, I start with a wrist break alla "4 magic moves", but instead of breaking my right wrist on the "side" I do it as if I was shaking hands, this gives me a very unusual take-away... but it's been very successful and consistent.

    So how about you guys?

Well I try and move my shoulders arms and hands together (triangle). I try to keep it connected. I get my club parrallel to my target line and the toe of the club pointing towards the sky. It's past that, that I have problems .

For me, it's an early hinge. Clubhead comes up, left shoulder and butt end of grip go down, left shoulder goes down. Right arm bends. Backswing finished!

I turn away with my arms in the centre of my chest and do not roll my forearms. I trace the toe of the club along the extended ball-to-target line.

Club pointing towards the sky ... I see that a lot, but doesn't that actually mean that your clubface is wide open on the top?

I use my right scapula. Slide it down and in. Takeaway complete. Everything else responds to that movement (hands, arms, shoulders).

Well this is what the pro at my golf course is telling me to do and judging by his sexy swing i'm going to listen . I'm having trouble getting to the correct position at the top, but if I do it slowly in the mirrow from a toe up position at half way the club doesn't lie open at the top. I know people who say the club should be the same as your spine angle at the half way point, but according to my pro this isn't correct and actually in fact the previous pro at my golf club also said toe up as well. Tiger woods is toe up at half way:

Again, this concept is the difference between one and two plane swings, both are correct in their own context.

In a two plane swing you need to create a wide take away and extend both behind you, this will have the toe of the club looking straight up at the half way back stage, the club is not on plane at this point and will be in a different position to where it needs to be at the same point in the downswing.

In a one plane swing the left arm is kept tight to the chest and the right arm folds with the right elbow moving up and back while staying close to the body, this pulls the club more around your body with the club face pointing back down towards the ball at the half way back stage and still on plane.

As I said in the other thread, 95% of people think a clubface angle looking more at the ball in the backswing is wrong. Even most pro's.

95% of golfers suffer a slice.

I implore you, before setting off on the same road everyone's been down before to, on this occasion, listen to the 5%!

                    Neil,

As I explained previously the direction on the clubface halfway back is different depending on your swing type, for the toe to be pointing straight up there needs to be some clockwise forearm rotation and this actually moves the clubface off plane, to be perfectly on plane it needs to be pointing back at the ball. I have shown this video before and it shows clearly where the clubface should point halfway back in a one plane swing:

Hey Brian isn't that the way Shawn Clement teaches the take away. The image of a wrecking ball he gets us to visualize.

Neil i'm sure your method is a good one and judging by your swing it's successful for you. I'd rather just stick to what i'm getting taught at the moment and see where that takes me, but this is why I come on a forum like this. It's great to get to see other peoples methods and perspectives on things.

Mike, the wrecking ball illustrates uninterrupted momentum of the club to the ball.

Of course it's up to you but I am of the same understanding as Neil here.

Yes Mike, it's the same concept and one that I subscribe to.

Yeah I tried it for a while and found it really quite good actually. It's a nice fluid swing. I might actually give it a go again. It's requires less thought. So what i'm attempting to do at the moment is a two plane swing and thats a one plane swing method?
