  • Momentus Swing Trainer

Hi folks, looks like a great site for beginners like myself. I've been watching Golf Tv and they've been heavily promoting the Momentus, a kind of weighted club which is supposed to help your swing. Has anyone tried one of these, or a club like it, and do they help?

I struggle to find any consistency in my swing, I know what I should be doing but can't manage it all that often! I wondered if one of those clubs could be the Holy Grail (!)

(Along with years of practice, toil and sweat!)

    Cheers

    Re: Momentus Swing Trainer

My neighbor has one and uses it frequently. I can't say that it has helped his swing much as his handicap remains in the high 20's. I borrow it from time to time to use as a great "tool" for loosening up my stiff muscles. It makes a normal club feel like swinging a toothpick (ala a doughnut for a baseball bat).

I have a weighted club with a weight on the end and a moulded grip, though I a replaced the grip with a regular one. For me, the biggest advantage of using such a device is that it's very helpful in making the player iniate the downswing through the lower body (legs) rather then the upper body (shoulder, arms and hands) which is probably one of the first mistakes beginners make.

If you are cash-strapped but would like such a device, get an old club and fill the shaft or head with sand or other, but tbe careful not to make the club too heavy.

          Re: Momentus Swing Trainer

That's a good point; I've struggled with keeping my arms quiet in the downswing so I hoped that the Momentus would help me to "feel" the correct downswing.

Imagine my surprise when it turned up yesterday, and on the video that accompanies it Jim pronounces that the most effective way to downswing is to "push down and toward the ball with the right hand"! Seems contrary to all the good advice on GTO. Oh well, I'll try it and see how it goes......

              Re: Momentus Swing Trainer

              Newbie,

I went the Momentus route in training for long drive, I have since gotten rid of it as it almost caused me a neck injury. The design looks sound but it is not.

There are two things wrong with it and I'll give you a better and cheaper solution. The purpose for swinging a "heavy club" is to create more resistance. The first thing wrong with the momentus the shaft and head are both weighted. A normal golf club the head weights more than the shaft, you need to feel the clubhead during the swing, with the Momentus you don't. The second and most important is the extra torque it puts on the elbows and neck.

              The fix to this:
A small amount of resistance is all one needs to keep the golf muscles in shape. While doing Long Drive this summer the concensious answer was to take a long cotton sock and rubber band it to a driver head. It will not only help show you your swing path but add just enough resistance to be benificial.

Do yourself a favor and don't hurt yourself,

                Re: Momentus Swing Trainer

                Sorry guys

My advice is stop watching Golf TV and get of your butt and get down the practice ground.

Your not going to get better sitting on your backsides watching the goggle box.

                Now be told

I have one of these on order. I have heard that they are very good, especially for warming up before a round. I may have some available on the site if they impress!!!

                  I will keep you posted...

                    Re: Momentus Swing Trainer

According to a PGA Pro instuctor I have spoken with, he says the Momentus Trainer is not to be used like a regular club, but to be moved through the swing range s-l-o-w-l-y so that the golf muscles are excercised. The trainer was purchased from the inventor and their sales pitch is to swing the thing like a weighted bat. This can and will lead to injury as it is quite heavy. For what it's worth.

                      Re: Momentus Swing Trainer

The Momentus isn't going to teach the perfect swing but it is a good tool. If used properly, you're not going to get injured!! Don't swing out of your shoes with it...Nice and smooth. Additional weight helps get your take away on plane and in a solid position when you stop at the top.
Use infront of the mirror and for warming up on the range. I've had mine for a few years now and use it regularly.

I think the Momentus is one of the best training aids ever invented, if used correctly. If you swing it and let it swing by its own weight and momentum you'll learn an on-plane swing. It will also teach you a straight line delivery. Golfers try to swing the club in a circle. Moving in a circle developes centrifugal force. Centrifugal force is what releases the club. This is why you see so many golfers struggling with casting and an early release. They develope centrifugal force way too early. We want to restrain centrifugal force.

By moving in a straight line we avoid centrifugal force. Letting the momentus fall and swing in the downswing by its own weight it will fall working with gravity. The hands will fall straight down to their impact position hence the straight line delivery.

                          Re: Momentus Swing Trainer

I don't know what they use them for, but I do know that just about every player on the Nationwide Tour was carrying a weighted swing trainer in his bag when they visited Boise for the Albertson's Open. I got to see this because I was there for the practice rounds. You will never see one on in the bag on TV because it would count against the limit of 14.

Anyhow, there must be something about them that really good players like. My guess is that it is more about warm-up than swing plane... but only a sub-par golfer could really answer the question.

The reason the Momentus isn't in their bag is because it is used strictly for warm up. It is a weighted club and not meant to hit golf balls. It has nothing to do with being over the 14 club limit.

I have a Momentus also, but I recently saw a swing weight with a golf grip on it that looked like it was kinda cool. I think it was called Mojo or something like that. It came in three different weights.
