  • Help with swing

    Hi
I'm looking for a bit of constructive help please with my swing.
I play to a reasonable standrad, around a 10 h'cap & have a good short game, but my iron play sucks!
I struggle with lag & a proper release.
Can you have a look at this clip & give me a few pointers?

    Thanks

    Re: Help with swing

Your golf swing is good, especially the backswing and transition. Looking at your downswing I get the feeling that you have too flexible a clubshaft for your swing, there is rather a lot of forward bowing and this may be affecting your ball impact. There are some on this forum better qualified on this subject who may verify that or not.

You seem to be heaving your shoulders through impact and stalling your body turn, this is making your left arm chicken wing a little as you come through. Try a smoother body turn with the shoulders a little more level and the wrists relaxed.

      Re: Help with swing

If you freeze the video at frame 31 (ignore the bowed shaft, thats a camera framerate issue) look at the position of your hands at impact, directly above the ball, this a weak impact position for your irons, hence the "sucks" iron play (you probably hit the ball thin and fat quite alot)

You need to work on your impact, your hands should be ahead of the ball at impact, shaft leaing forward to generate the slightly downward angle of attack on the ball, watch a few youtube video`s explaining impact position, or better still, pop along to your local pro and tell him/her you want to work on impact with you irons, if their any good, a one hour lesson should have you on the right track.

          Re: Help with swing

As a fellow player in search of the holy swing grail, I am convinced that the biggest difference between the A golfer and those that struggle, is the acceptance of the fact that total control of the location of bottom of the swing arc is the primary imperative toward successful golf. Pros know weight forward on impact with ball forward in stance is the most consistent way to achieve this end. We strugglers refuse to even set up correctly because of our lack of confidence in even getting to the ball, let alone trapping it out there. Until we can wrap our brains around that idea, we struggle. Get to the ball out in front with weight still ahead, more often than not good contact/divot placement will result. And equipment change has minimal affect, except to let the average non accepting duffer, get away with with this refusal see the light.

What is being said by all the repliers is on the same theme. I also saw what Brian said about the lack of body flow, which relates to what Adjani and dagosa say about getting to a strong impact. I agree with the observations of these guys.

The first move on the DS has to be the shift of the weight forward, without throwing the upper body and arms. Then as the DS progresses, the body has to continue to turn, and the arms stay pretty well centered to the sternum of the turning body. The hands and club lag behind. The head is behind the ball at impact, by virtue of the spine tilt.

You won't be able to make Tiger's swing, but this video is for illustration purposes of the points covered above by all.
