  • Ball position on par 3s

How high and where do you put the ball when hitting a par 3? My club has par 3s of 170 - 190 yds and I know some courses have very short par 3s. Depending on the length of the hole, I'll use a lofted (5,7,9) wood or a lofted (6,7,8,9) iron but do I tee it up, tee it down; center of feet or towards the front foot? It's confusing. As you might guess, I'm a high handicapper (22).

    Thanks.

    MDSCPA,

When you play par three's or hit any iron of a tee you should get used to teeing the ball just higher than the grass i.e just give yourself a good lie nothing more.

It's no use teeing the ball up two inches because you don't hit the ball perched up any other time.

Ball position depends on the club if say a pitching wedge is dead centre a 9 would be one ball width further forward an so on untill a 3 iron would be just inside your left heel.

What is more important is which side do you tee up on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

e.g If you wany to fade the ball tee up on the right hand side as you stand behind the tee, if you want to draw the ball tee up on the left. If you hit pretty straight tee up just right of centre.
The above goes for all tee shots.

    Hope this helps

    Ian.

      Ian:

      Thanks.

I gather then, that I use the same descending swing that I use on the fairway; not to sweep the ball as with a driver.

        Yes mate,

With every club in the bag up to and including 3 wood I try to take a divot, obviously a very slight desending blow with the 3 wood.

The driver is the only club in the bag I tee up high and sweep it away.

^ Agreed - play the ball normally in your stance.

But here's a tip I got that does great things for par 3 tees:

Tee up your shot in a previously made divot. Still tee it up to just over the grass, but now you won't have any dirt resistance if you chunk it.

It's like teeing the ball up high while still teeing it up low.

            Lowpost,

A great idea but don't you think this is a bit negative thinking (if you chuck it).

If you tee up thinking "if I chuck it" you probably will!!!!

It's like saying what if I go left in the water or bunker, you always do!!!

Re: Ball position on par 3s

I have a golfing buddy that tees his ball in divots all the time. It works for him - and if it works for you, GREAT! If find it very distracting and it distorts my distance the ball is above the ground. The ball appears to be teed a little higher, but really isn't higher than the tee box and I catch them thin. For myself, I would be better off hitting the ball out of the divot than from a tee in the divot.

Try to find the flattest section of the tee box to hit your tee shots from. If the ground is higher at the ball than it is at your feet, it will promote a draw and if the ground is lower at the ball than at your feet, it will promote a fade.

^ re: level ground is great general tee-up advice. It was the first thing stated to me in a playing lesson - setup with your feet and ball as level as possible.
