  • Laid off at the top

    Hi,

I'm a low-handicap player, and have been working with my pro on getting my backswing steeper and less laid off at the top. I'm on plane until just after my right arm is parallel to the ground (I'm a lefty). At the second half of the backswing, my club gets a little floppy, lays off and points right.

My pro tells me that my right arm lifts and gets away from my chest on the way to the top, so he's trying to get my arms a little deeper and more connected. He's also trying to have me feel my thumbs more under the shaft. I'm not sure whether or not I'm on the right track.

Any suggestions on preventing that little lay-off at the top? I have down-the-line video I could email if needed.

    Hi,

Your pro is trying, as you say, to keep your backswing more compact, which is good. The idea of the feeling of the thumbs under the shaft is also way to help keep the club on plane and under control towards the end of the backswing. Another nice thought that could help stop you from laying the club off at the top of the backswing is this. Again making sure that you stay nicely connected on the backswing, but have the feeling that you are pointing your right thumb in your left ear at the top of the backswing. Some people find this helps them stop laying the club off. Remember keep the swing nicely connected as your pro has been teaching you.

Let me know how you get on with this swing thought.

Thanks for the good tip. "Right thumb pointed in my left ear" definitely keeps the shaft from flopping right at the top. It feels steep and across the line, but on video it's perfect- so much for feel being real. Appreciate it.
