  • Lie Boards

I bought a lie board recently to improve my ball striking. I have read that one should place the lie board on fluffy grass to eradicate the fat shot. Is this correct? Could anyone add anything to this?

    Thanks.

    Re: Lie Boards

The only reason to put the lie board on fluffy grass is because some people are afraid to hit down on a lie board. If you're not, there's no need.

How are you using the lie board to improve your ball striking? I've only ever used it to check lie angles on clubs (and then bend those that need it).

I suppose you get some "tells" from the scuffmarks on the lie board re bottoming out before the ball, and inside-out/outside-in clubhead paths.

That is ... until the board is scuffed so bad you can't distinguish new marks from old.

        Re: Lie Boards

I`m using the lie board in conjunction with a training club called the "Tour Striker". It is a club made by Martin Chuck and, basically, the club face consists of a sweet spot. If you don`t hit the ball with the sweet spot of the club face, the ball will just roll along the ground. To get it in the air, you must hit it with the sweet spot and, in order to do this, you must strike the ball with a forward leaning shaft. I could cheat a bit with the tour striker if I used in on fluffy grass. It really needs to be used on very short grass or hard ground.

Martin has advised me (as, indeed, others on other forums have) to use it on a lie board to really teach me how to hit the ball first.

It was very difficult at the beginning but I now find I am able to do it, and I have found that it has really helped my ball striking on normal ground.
