  • Question about Eye Dominance and Ball Position

I am right handed and left-eye dominant.

I have been doing some research about eye dominance and ball position.

The consensus seems to be that for left-eye dominant (right handed) players, the ball should be positioned well ahead--at or even ahead of the front foot.

Does anyone here have any experience with this situation?

Re: Question about Eye Dominance and Ball Position

For me, eye dominance should only be considered when aligning putts from behind and over the ball.

As far as ball positioning is concerned on full swings, it should be the same for either dominance. Why would you place the ball forward or back? This will significantly effect your ball flight.

You should be comfortable over the ball with correct ball positioning for the shot you want to hit.

The article I read suggested that the dominant eye should be behind the ball in set up for a full shot.

For the cross-dominant player, this means that the ball must by necessity be played closer to the front foot.

I gather that you disagree with this theory?

"Always behind the ball"...so you have to imagine that there are several touring pros out there that play right-handed and are left-eye dominant (and left-handed/right eye). Do you see any pro playing the ball off their leading foot (all the time)? (excluding the driver and longer clubs where it is appropriate to play the ball forward). So any SW-3i shots?

            Hello elorasc
The question of eye dominance is a major issue in being able to consistently hit the ball well. I was told years ago to use my left eye (it's what Jack Nicholas does - so of course we all follow) but last summer a new instructor gave me a great tip that has made all the difference. It does not matter if you are right or left handed... your dominant eye could be either your right or left. There is an easy test you can take to figure this out. Once you know which eye to use, your golf game will improve significantly. There is an article on golfgurls.com that addresses this very question, with a link to that test to check out which eye is dominant for you.

              Thanks for the link.

I am right handed, but left-eye dominant.
