  • Hips too fast?

Hi, first post here, hope this is not out of line or in the wrong place!! I took a video of my swing in my blackberry yesterday and posted up a photo sequence on my facebook:

    http://www.facebook.com/album.php?ai...0&l=18ad5e06de

I wondered what people thought of this as I am particularly bothered about one bit - I am quite happy with the sequence up to photo 7, however between photo 7 and 8 my lower body seems to race ahead, my hands get left behind and I have lost the angle between the club and my wrists. I feel like half way down, just after the transition, I am in a decent position, but my hips and turning too quick and shooting out towards the ball too quick from there.

    Any views welcome, thanks, Tim.

    Hi Tim,

I cant see much evidence of your hips racing ahead. It almost seems your body turn is a little delayed and that is getting your upper torso lagging behind into a bit of a reverse pivot position.

Can you explain what is happening with your ball flight please?

      Hi Brian,

As you might suspect, I'm hitting a lot of right to left. Flipping it over, but because I'm a fair player and have a decent pair of hands, I can hold it off and keep it somewhat straight a reasonable amount of the time. However I am clearly making compensations which is never ideal. No doubt costing distance and power.

Interesting point on the problem, thanks for that opinion. My view is that at photo 7 things are looking pretty good. Weight has 'settled' in the transition, club on a nice plane and generally look to be unwinding quite nicely. However at photo 8 yes the body is hanging back, the head also moves back a bit, and I feel like when my hands are hip height I should still have a 90 degree angle between club and forearms - a classic 'late hit' position, whereas in my sequence the wrists are already somewhat unloaded. This hanging back also causes ball flight to be higher than I would like, again losing power and distance.

Be interested in any further views. Thanks for the reply.

just my opinion and it may not be worth much but i had the same problem and i was not rotating torso fast enough and hitting alot of right to left with plenty if sky balls because i was to right handsy and throwing the club with that right hand resulting in the same things your having. for me it ended being a problem in the first move off the ball using to much hands and wrist

Yes I can see that you are having to flip through with your wrists which causes the right to left flight.

Take a look at this video from Shawn Clements. It clarifies nicely how the hips and torso should work in the back and downswing. I hope it is of some help to you.

Ok, actually your swing looks pretty good. Wanna try something? Allow your weight and head to drift back slightly more on the backswing instead of staying over the ball as much. This will get your weight back behind the ball better. You won't be fighting to stay behind the ball as much on the downswing and you can release your whole body at the ball more aggressively and naturally. Hope I'm making sense but I had been fighting blocks for a while because of a very active lower body and this adjustment did the trick. I really love the way I've been striking the ball lately.
I think this will make a world of difference in your swing.
