  • Backswing Too Quick

I have been told that my backswing is too quick and jerky - do any of you guys know how I can slow it down? I have tried but just can't seem to get it smooth.

    Thnks

The medicus will fix that, the hinge will break every time until you slow it down enough.

You can count to 3. Start on 1, at the top you done with 2 and 3 is trigger.

There is also the idea that you are just swinging with your hands and arms. If they are the only ones, you can get pretty quick naturally...nothing big in there to slow anything down. Make sure you use a lower body and torso move back to start the swing. THe arms and hands should be taken for a short ride first. Then they can lift and set to the top.

Are you seeing bad results with your current swing? When you try to slow down, do you see better results?

A bit unorthodox to be sure, but when I getting ready to swing a club I use the old "KMA" saying. (kiss my "butt"). K&M are to the top, and A is the down swing. Works for me. Since I am talking to the ball, I want to get my point across. Of course the ball never listens.

Another drill that works well for swing tempo, and timing is the feet together drill. With the feet together, you can swing only so fast before you lose your balance, both in the take away, and the down swing. The fastest speed you can swing at, with your feet together, with out losing your balance is pretty much the fastest swing you can use, and still stay in control during the normal swing. GJS

Try a little lagging clubhead takeaway where the handle moves back first. "Step on your right foot" to start the BS

Why cant you swing back slower? I think you just need to work on doing it.

This sounds like a great idea. I have a very fast backswing and it gets me into trouble all the time. Because I swing so fast, I usually grip the club too tightly so I can hold on... I've tried the 1-2-3 rhythm thing with words and music in my head... but I only get faster! I'm heading to the driving range this afternoon and will try your method. Thanks.

Always suspected a fast backswing throws you off balance which, in turn, leads to all kinds of bad shots; fat shots, thin shots and damn near everything else that can go wrong!
              Loss of distance, as well.
              Does that make sense? ...Wil

believe me BrianW I have tried... it must be nerves or something.

Thanks Greg - i have tried the counting, which works on the range sometimes, but doesn't seem to engrain for course play.

I have not tried the medicus but I will have a look into that now.

                Again Thanks for the replies.

                  Re: Backswing Too Quick

I know King isn't very popular these days but as a matter of interest what do you think is the purpose of the back swing?

If you start looking at the backswing as purely a positional move then it might be easier to take the club back more slowly.

the feet together drill is a great way of finding your ideal tempo
I do the drill as I start my pre round warm up when you find a speed at which you can swing at without swaying or loosing your balance then that I s your ideal tempo

Forget about speed and work on tempo.
A good tempo is the key do a decent swing.

                        Re: Backswing Too Quick

Hi , just saw this thread and thought I would wade in with my 2 cents worth. First , have you had any lessons? If so, did your pro pick you up on it ? Is your fast back swing actually causing you some identifiable problems? If not, leave it alone. There is nothing that will screw up your back swing quicker than concentrating and trying to self diagnose anything back past your body. If you are not having balance problems or out of sync weight shifting or locking the right leg (often causing inexplicable shanking,or hitting fat or slicing regularly) leave it be, some people just have a fast back swing. So long as you are still accelerating through the shot leave it. I have experienced and seen too many swings destroyed by well meaning friends, reading or watching others swings and trying to apply them. Try the song or counting routine. If it doesn't work for you save your self a lot of heartache and get a lesson,if the rest of your swing is sound one lesson and some practice drills should do it
                        Regards,Peter

I can s that my advice on making a slower backswing sounds a bit simplistic but I still think you need to work on doing it. If you wanted to roll a golf ball along the floor different distances you would automatically adjust the speed you swung back and through, the same with throwing a ball.

Take a look at the attached video it gives some good advice on tempo:

As an avid ballroom dancer, I was taken by a tip in an article by Jack Nicklaus. If you swing to the waltz tempo, it may be fast or slow but your back swing and downswing will be in sinc. Everyone is different but this swing thought does wonders to coordinate the two moves. Now, take some ballroom dance waltz lessons and help your golf game. It works and your dance and golf partners will both be impressed. If you're familiar with the song "Saturday Night" by the Eagles, or "Time in a Bottle" by Jim Croce you'll get the drift. One is slower, one a little faster, pick one that works for you. No Strauss waltzes please, as the tempo is too fast to start with. As you get familiar with the waltz tempo, start listening to other tunes til you find one that works for you. Now you have a tempo swing thought that is lasting and durable.
                            Best of Luck..it's fun !

I have begun to use a "personal mantra" that has a simple 1-2-3 rhythm to it. Your "K_M_A" works, or another 3 syllable phrase is good. It slows down my swing, makes it all "softer" and without that push effect that often gets me into trouble.
